That depends on what the job is. The Navy is excellent at defending American shipping from hostile threats. The Coast Guard is excellent at rescuing people that are in danger in America's waters. The Navy is an offensive/defensive branch of the military. The Coast Guard is defensive only, but is vital to catching illegal immigrants and illegal items (drugs and weapons) being brought into this country.
So, it really boils down to the job. Defending oil tankers in the Persian Gulf is a good job for the Navy. Catching drug runners is a good job for the Coast Guard.

Well as a Navy vet I could take a jab or two at the coasties but they have a different mission than that of the Navy. Theirs is more of a search and rescue and law enforcement role. The Navy is well in the business of projecting our foreign policy around the world and defending our country. The Navy does help out the Coast Guard in the drug intervention role from time to time as our ships are better suited to patrol for long periods at sea than theirs, plus we can pack a bigger punch than them.

Not better just different. In the Coast Guard you'll get more opportunity to serve a stateside assignment but you'll still have hazardous duty, most of it won't involve gunplay although if you get involved in drug interdiction thats a possibility too. Rescue duties have you going into the same conditions that caused the need for rescue and I expect the Coast Guard to become more involved in border security on direction from Homeland Security.

Coast guard is part of the DOT during peace time and Navy during war time. They mostly intercept drugs and illegals coming from down south. I have a buddy who is CG and is in P.R. right now, myself being the blue and gold. It depends on what sort of job you want and what your interests are. Navy has the nuke program, SeALs, SWCC, and a hundred others and the CG has their rescue swimmers (which have some super tough training too). Either way you're gonna get waterlogged and love the heck out of it.

The two services have very different missions. The Coast Guard isn't even under the control of the DOD.
