roughness as in sandpaper? On the inside of your cheek or gums?

It could be as simple as a fungal infection or it may be more serious.

I would recommend seeing your general dentist first. If your general dentist suggests a biopsy he/she will refer you to an oral surgeon who will be able to further asist you.

The reason I suggest your general dentist first is b/c it may be nothing to worry about. Or your general dentist may suggest just keeping an eye on the area. When are you due for your next cleaning? If it is within the next couple of months...bring it up at your check up. If you are really concerned and need an answer sooner, make an appointment.

If it isn't on your teeth you should show your regular doctor first. He will tell you where/what to do next. Sometimes an infection or other problem will surface in your mouth first...
