Its the classic combination of protein balanced with carbohydrate. Your body craves such substances to balance itself out and when you do it, it feels satisfied. Lets not forget to that the batter in the fish also adds to the enjoyment as it gives a crunchy texture to counterbalance the softness of the fish and chips. And not to mention the whole thing tastes so fab!

Cause way back when they first started eating that combo both those foods where easy to get because there were a lot of both to be had. Lots of fish in the sea and everybody knows the UK is surrounded by sea as is Ireland and potatoes are on of the easiest food to grow. So land and sea come together and you have the famous Fish & Chips Combo oh and don't forget the Coleslaw, that's mostly cabbage and once again another really inexpensive food. Here we have places that have all you can eat fish and chips night. It's great! Happy Eating! LOL *hugs* JAC< in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

because fish and muffin dont go well so as chips and stir fry chicken! :D
to be honest its just because it used to be a takeaway food back in the 17th century. its easy to be packed and its cheap (as i think its hard 2 make a takeway steak and chips and its gonna b pretty expensive anyway..). and the other reason is the fat(oil) that used to fried the fish is too hot to fried anything else, but its good for chips. so instead of throwing away the oil, they sell it both together as fish and chips..
well thats the history y they go 2gether so well. :) :) hv fun!

Frying fish tends to leave a stron flavor in the oil. Chips, potatoes help clean the tastes out of oil. So you cook your fish then your chips and you can get more use out of your oil.
Getting use out of grease used to be more of an issue. You could not go to the grocery and buy bottles of cooking oil or tubs of lard. A hundred years ago women treated grease an doil for cooking like it was gold! Every drop was saved and used to the fullest.
And when the oil was no good for cooking it was turned into soap.
So fish and chips were effecient. chips, french fires go great with many things or just all by them selves!

As raredawn said, and interestingly enough...the shops originally used chips to help clean the oil and gave the chips away. It works for me, anyway. Good crunch.
A secondary question: Why do Americans avoid malt vinegar and salt on chips and fish, using catsup.
I can't get accustomed to this idea. Here they give tartar sauce and catsup.
Any Americans care to answer?

A good question...one which may never be truly answered. Perhaps it it the scent of the two together, or maybe something as simple as taste. All I know is a good chip can go with just about anything...steak, chicken, but especially burgers! Why do burgers go with 'chips'?

I only like it in restaurants and I like battered fish and lots of malt vinegar on both the fish and the chips!

is it the texture, crisp on the outside and soft in the middle? is it that they both are quite bland and go well with salt and vinegar? is it that it's often convenient to buy the two together, as there are shops that sell 'fish and chips' as opposed to 'fish and mashed potatoes?' is it a convenience food?
