For example, my bf and i are completely different...when i met him, that's what i liked. he taught me things i would never do and i did the same. i feel more "cultured" as a result and i'm learning new things!

I think, both. When I first met my husband he was the complete opposite of me. He was sporty, muscular, he liked anything to do with sports and cars etc... I instead was more the intellectual type who liked to read, go to the movies, take a walk in the park etc... so I was attracted to this person who was so different from me. As the years passed we learnt so much about each other and discovered that we aren't as different as we thought. We actually like a lot of the same things !

Both. Having interests in common can be a good ice breaker, but it is not the be all and end all. In fact over the long term having seperate interests can be a good thing. Also, sometimes you pick up new things from the other person.

The same, but the funny thing is, I get more women with different interests than me interested in me than common interest women. I'm not into the whole fasion, prep scene, but I get tons of preppy girls drooling all over me, I wish I could get some kind of repellent for this problem...

The best is the same, but not exact same. A simple example would be two athletes of different sports, or two musicians of different instruments. This way you have plenty to talk about.

I like guys that are similar in some ways and different in others. you know how annoying it would be if a guy agreed with me on everything I said or the other way around. there has to be some middle ground.

same interests, you can't be friends with people that have no idea of what you are talking about. Unless you are really, really gregarious.
