I think it actually depends on your hair-type. For people who have naturally poofy or frizzy hair, it will work just fine but you need to run the iron over the same strand of hair several times. For those whose hair is almost straight and totally flat....it will work perfectly.

If you want a good straightener, make sure you get a ceramic one. They work a lot better than the other types. Now, your mom might have seen someone with frizzy hair after they had straightened it and thought that that's how all hair looks when it's straightened. Most likely, the girl she saw wasn't straightening her hair correctly and wasn't protecting her hair.
To avoid frizzies when straightening your hair, make sure you're straightening your hair correctly. Ask your hairstylist (the person who trims and treats your hair) or a friend whose hair you like (and who uses a flat iron) to show you the right way and give you any tips. When straightening your hair, don't overheat the iron and don't hurry the process. If you have curly hair, like me, you should set aside a good 30-45 minute chunk of time to straighten your hair. If you have wavy or straight hair, it shouldn't take as long.
Remember to protect your hair from heat! Buy a heat protection hair product (either a cream or spray...ask for help if you need to) at your local drugstore and use it before you straighten your hair.
For price, I wouldn't get one for more than 39.99.
Good luck!

Revlon makes pretty good cheap ones and you can get them at the grocery store. If you're willing to spend a little more, go to a hair supply store and get one for a little more money, but good quality as well. It makes your hair sleek, but it also makes you hair frizzy, simply because your hair breaks off and sticks out at odd angles. If you use a smoothing product, it's a lot easier to manage with a straightener. Make sure you don't do it too much because it kills your hair.

You do have to be careful not to get it too hot. Ceramic or natural plates are the best. Ulta has a $150 one by Wigo that is made of Jade on sale for $30 this month and it is the best I have ever used. I wouldn't use it past med. heat starting out and get your mom to help you learn to use it right.
Also, make sure to use a heat protectant. Sally's has a great spray in one by a brand called Ion for about $6 and it lasts a long time. Keep in mind, they can be damaging to your hair if they are too hot or you hold it in one place too long, but with the right technique and products, they will make your hair look sleek.

I have one that I bought on clearance from Conair for like $6 and it has different attatchments. I've had it for a few years and it works great. It has ceramic plates. If you use good products in your hair your hair will be fine. I suggest Biolage Color Treated shampoo (has extra stuff to protect and moisturize even if your hair isn't color treated.) and All Soft conditioner by Redkken. Yes your hair will look great but the iron can dry out your hair after time. Just keep your ends trimmed regularly and you'll be fine. :)

They will make your hair look nice for awhile, then they will start drying your hair out and causing it to break. Try using Matrix Sleek Look shampoo and conditioner and the finishing spray. If you insist on using a flat iron make sure you use a heat protecting spray or cream.

Most of the cheap kind don't work as well. I use the CHI and it costs $150. If you buy a cheaper straightener then get a product like frizzies curl serum to reduce frizz

Using flat irons will make your hair look beautiful and sleek, but in the long run it ruins your hair and causes more split ends. If you do get one, make sure it's ceramic. They are easier on your hair. Also make sure you condition it properly.

Only a sucky one will make your hair frizzy. I'm not sure of a good brand, but ceramic ones are supposed to be the best.

depends on the thickness of your hair and the process agent you used to straighten it. truth is you ca straighten your hair with a friend a towel and a household iron if you really want to. My Sister used to use big (4" rollers) to straighten hers and the irons are best if you use a polishing agent specific to using one. Stop the frizzies with a good conditioner designed for curly or wavy hair (like Herbal Essence) Straighten with a barrel brush, regular hair dryer and "hair Shine" it smooths the hair but doesn't damage it (set on cool for 10minutes once yu have the look you want to reseal the cuticle), sleep with a hairnet or nylon scarf to prevent tangles and poof.
