I thought cats don't have a taste for sweets, but I just caught my cat licking the icing off of a piece of cake.

Cat's don't have taste buds for sweet, but apparently there's something else about the frosting, other than the sweetness, that appeals to kitty.

Tastes are complex and have more than one component, so even though cats can't taste sweetness, sweet foods must still have some kind of taste for them. Sometimes that taste must be one that they like.

Cats don't have a taste for sweets- but they can tell if something is milky and buttery and oily and bad for you. :) My male cat will start drinking any unattended beverage (including beer, fruit juices, and milkshakes), and my female cat will generally eat cheese and LOVES milk - it's got to be the butter or oil in the frosting.

I don't know, but I have caught my cats doing the same thing. Can't say it does much for the cake!!! Serously, cats have fewer sweet receptors than we do, but they do have some, and kittens tend to have more than older cats, and they are also more willing to experiment.

I thought the same thing until this crazy cat of mine ate some of my birthday cake a few years ago. I guess it goes to that curiosity thing with cats.

If it is a buttercream icing, it's most likely because of the butter. My cat did that one day. Other than that your cat could be like my other one that tried to eat anything.

Most cats love sweets. My cat Scooter loves marshmallow cream! And ice cream, too.

Cats just like people have sweet tooths. Its ok if you give her a little of it. But don't give her something as strong as frosting. Inless a very, very little bit. Cats normaly can't eat that.

They like the fat and butter that is in it. If you don't mind sharing and it is Butter cream icing. It will help with hairballs. I always put a finger full of Butter on my kitties nose once a month and he never throws up the hairballs, helps them to pass through their systems.
