Both are muslims. Sunnies believe that Mohammad is the last prophet, while Shites believe in the grand sons of the prophet who revived Islam. They both pray 5 times read the Koran etc. History of the middle east is they are basically tribes. Its about control, rule, land, and resources. Men are still hunters and killing is natural, its the gene in action. In 5000 years man must have fought 3000 wars. Even if times have changed aggression still needs outlet. Man needs just a reason to fight, if it is religion today, tomorrow it is language, if it is language then they will fight for dialect. Arabs are made up of many tribes if you notice their flags most of them will have swords. They just need a simple difference, to initiate a war. Its always "i am superior than you" attitude. Which is irreligious !

It is like asking what is the difference between a Catholic and a prostant? It is one believes that you inherit the cleric job of priest.
The other believes you should be appointed. But they both believe the other one is wrong. and going to hell.
215 shiit was killed yesterday and 15 Sunni were tied up and doused with karoscene and set on fire today. The Iraq police watched as they went up in flames. Mosques were burned down and more hate was spread.
One guy on here was just back from Iraq and said "we are just refree's to keep two radical religions from killing each other."
then you have them killing each other in Africa and genocide of Africans to take their land and herds. Then there is Hamass and Lebannon against Isreal and Jews. They all hate the Kurds and Druids so it is a never ending war.

Really the question, imo, would be what is the difference between a shiite extemist and a sunni extremist? The answer would be their religion. It could also be nothing, except religious interpretations. Both have extremists that seek revenge against each other with increasing violence. I don't know what affect the U.S. can have on this any more. I am wondering the same thing.

Just two different sects of Islam. The Sunnis are a minority in
Iraq and were pampered by Saddam to surround himself by
loyalists. The Shiites make up the largest part of people in Iraq
and were abused by the Sunnis along with the Kurds and are
planning now to take revenge on the Sunnis. It has little to do
with religion. They are fighting for the upper hand in governing
Iraq and there is nothing that the U.S. can do about it. Saddam
was a threat to the rest of the world as well as the majority of
his own people and had to go. Now its time for us to go and let
them resolve it among themselves. A nasty situation, but I dont
believe that we are now doing anything but wasting U.S. lives
and money.

Back in the old testament there were 12 tribes. Two of those tribes are the shite and the Sunni. They were called different names back then. Some tribes continue to get alone and some don't. They all hate the Israelis...the Jews. Is the US helping? They are defending Israeli, which I hope and pray they continue to do, now that the democrates are in control.

Unfortunately this is one of the flaws in Islam. They are supposed to be killing Jews and Christians as per the Koran. But they use the Koran to justify killing each other, because regardless of which one dies, it still benefits a Muslim.
Go figure.

I think they have differant beliefs. One group wants to believe in the early teaching of Muhammad and others want to believe in other teachings. You know religious groups pop up and then groups from that group come from the main group because of disagreements. Since they believe that a nonbeliever must be killed, they also kill each other because each group thinks they are the tru religous group, and must get rid of the other.
