"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for , the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1). In other words it is SUBSTANCE of the EVIDENCE. Faith is NOT BLIND! It drives me crazy when people say that. We have Faith in something we have evidence of. Belief is based on knowledge.

"There is a sun because I've seen it glow on the horizon", said the Eskimo, "there for I will walk south and see it." Walking is the substance of the evidence he saw.

When he finally sees the sun and knows it's there every morning, then he says, "I saw the sun come up yesterday so I BELIEVE it will come up tomorrow!" ,

Christians take action on their evidence by basing their lives(which become the substance) on Christ's teaching

Sometimes believe and faith are mixed up, it's not a big deal. In some cases it makes no difference. Faith is considered the first principle of action. With Christians it is also a principle of power because faith precedes miracles and gifts of the Spirit become evident when it is present.

I hope I didn't make that more complicated than was necessary

Faith is belief without evidence.

A belief is any claim we make in our mind about the world. Some people try to make faith and belief be synonyms, which I think throws away a very useful word.

At Hebrews 11:1 true faith in God , the Bible, Christ Jesus, Holy Spirit, true prophecy etc.- is defined as such: "Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld."

In other words we know the wind exists because of the things it does not because we see it. Or we trust in the backing of the gold in Fort Knox because we are able to use paper money. Scientists knew that Pluto(moon or whatever) exhisted not because they saw it but by the effect that it had on the orbits of the planets.
The epitome of any kind of faith is that of a religious nature or nature of creation. Why you may ask--If in fact we look in all the universe there are trillions of things that science cannot explain, but do in fact exhist without the slightest of mans' expertise. So faith in God etc. is unique.

On the other hand belief in God may not involve any trust in God, may totally lack any confidence in the Almighty with works to back it up(Not that in themselves works prove one has faith in God)Please note how Satan's angels fit into the picture at James --

*** Rbi8 James 2:18-19 ***

18 "Nevertheless, a certain one will say: "You have faith.......... 19 You believe there is one God, do you? You are doing quite well. And yet the demons believe and shudder"--Please remember Satan and the demons where once cherub and angels.

That is why beleif in a religion may have very little to do with faith in God -- The whole of Chapter 11 of Hebrews speak of women & men that were exemplary in true faith.

Sincerely,
THA

Belief and faith cold mean the same thing except that faith is something that people already know about, like faith in someones capabilities means that you know already that the person CAN do it whilst belief is you'rent sure but you just think that it might be possible.

Faith is commonly known as a belief, trust or confidence not based on Logic or Reason, but based on a transpersonal relationship with God, a higher power, elements of nature and/or a perception of the human race as a whole. Faith can be placed in a person, inanimate object, state of affairs, proposition or body of propositions such as a religious credo.

Faith is distinct from hope in that faith is typically general, rather than specific to an aspect, and in contrast to a "false hope" in a fantasy, the object of faith typically transcends what can be proven scientifically and sometimes exceeds what can be objectively defined. Faith can mean believing unconditionally. It can be acceptance of something that one has been told by one who is considered trustworthy. Faith, by its very nature, requires belief outside of known fact. Faith is formed through instinct, intuition, meditation, communing with nature, prayer, or perceived usefulness of a belief system.

Belief is usually defined as a conviction of the truth of a proposition without its verification; therefore a belief is a subjective mental interpretation derived from perceptions, contemplation(reasoning), or communication.

In the religious sense, "belief" refers to a part of a wider spiritual or moral foundation — generally called faith. Historically, faiths were generated by groups seeking a functionally valid foundation to sustain them. The generally accepted faiths usually note that, when the exercise of faith leads to oppression, clarification or further revelation is called for.

it takes faith to believe in god because you cant see him
your faith will cause you to preach to others about your beliefs
so faith without works of preaching is dead and thus would prove you really don't believe in god
