My 88 year old client says she was always deaf but didn't realize it. She now wears a hearing aid (had surgery at one point also) and can hear me but only if she has the hearing aid in and turned on. Wouldn't her parents, husband, children, friends have had a hard time communicating with her and realized she was deaf well before she was 60?

Well, she could have gained the immense oppertunity to lipread.

She's 60? I'm 50 but I have a hard time remembering things some times. Maybe she went off in one of her dreamlands.

The world is an odd place-anything is possible.
I knew someone whose parents thought was deaf and dumb because he never spoke, but he just never spoke-out of choice.
But if she is your client, why aren't you asking HER that very question-ask her about how she interacted with her parents, etc.

She's old... She's making up stories.
That couldn't possibly have happened.
By a very young age she would have realized... not 60 years old!!

they would know it 5 minutes after being there.. have you tried talking to a deaf person,,, they hear nothing at all... some can read lips but they would have you talk real slow and move lips to every vowel... think she was dreaming or something,,,,,,,,,,,
