Due to the carbonation in pop ... a small (or big) "pop" can be heard upon pulling back the tab. Hmmm ... sounds better than a "soft" drink ... how can a drink be "soft"? :)

A soft drink is any drink that does not contain alcohol. This is not necessarily soda pop. I don't know why or when the word pop was added to the drink that was made from soda water and sugar with various herbs and flavorings.

Because when you open the bottle the top pops off. Mostly Midwest and Southern states call soda, pop. Or soda pop.

Not all soft drinks are called pop.
Where I live, we call it soda.
In other places, you'll hear: coke, cola, soda pop, etc.
