Luke 9: 1-5

1When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3He told them: "Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic. 4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them."

No where in my question did I ask for any other bible verse. If you can't answer the question why did you bother.

It was a simple enough question.

It means just what it says.
At this time there was no written word.
God sent the twelve to spread the word and use the powers He gave them to prove they were for real. Where ever they went, Christians were to take care of them and give them a place to stay. If people do not welcome you, you leave them and they were not responsible for the teaching of these people any more. In other words the souls of the people that rejected them, they are not responsible for.

Like a LOT of the people on this site. Tell them the truth, show them the truth, and after that, we are not responsible for the lose of their soul.

1When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

He authorized them to use specific magical rituals, and to pass on Jesus' message.

3He told them: "Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.

Don't carry anything but the good intention of helping people and the message of Jesus.

and 4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.

Rely, like Blanche DuBois, "on the kindness of strangers"

5If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them."

If you're not welcome, LEAVE! And don't take anything with you, not even the dust from the streets.

This last, in particular, sounds like good advice. If you're preaching to people and they don't accept it, stop. Leave them be. Go on to someone who will accept it.

Ok well what I think is before Jesus came we did not have power to do anything. It is like going up to gang and saying stop it , but if you go up to a gang and say stop it with an army behind you , i think the gang will listen to you. Jesus dies on the cross and that gave us power to overcome this world. Christians probably have the most power in the world but it is in the Spiritual realm where we have the most power. If I can authority over a demon , then I consider myself a very powerful person . I think verses 3-5 could be courtesy for that time or it could be symbloic ...i don't know ..maybe like in verse 3 it could mean don't rely on yoursleves for the power because it comes from Jesus only and so it could be rely on Jesus for all of your needs

By visibly shaking the dust off their feet as they exited that particular town, they were visually giving a testimony to God against these town folk for not having welcomed them.

In a sense, figuratively, they- the Twelve, were also "washing their hands" from this rejection of God.

This was when Jesus began to assign the Sacred Tasks, first to His Apostles, then to seventy-two more disciples, to spread the Word and to heal the sick.

The instructions were clear-cut, as it is written, to "preach the Message" FREELY and not be paid to do the Sacred Works.

The main PROVISO was to deliver Peace ONLY to those who welcomed them, fed and sheltered them, but for them to walk away ["shake the dust off ...and leave.."] from those who were not interested at all...

Peace be with you.

It means that the apostles were sent out to preach the good news about God's kingdom and to do powerful works to prove this, , that they were to have faith in getting hospitality and not taking provisions with them, and they were to not get offended but but let people's attitudes toward their message be a judgement against those people.

Jesus gave them the same power he had and they could heal and do miracles as he did, but if they when some where they were rejected, not to stay and try to convince them about Jesus, but leave if they were not welcomed in a place.

Jesus was asking his disciples to spread his word. (Which Christians are told to do today.) The twist is that those who did not welcome the teachers they shook the dust off, which in this time was a big insult. It meant you did not care to take a piece of them with you. You also were cleaning your feet in an unholy/lawful manner. I believe that this passage continues on telling the disciples to bless those that welcomed them in.

It means that Jesus gave his disciples supernatural power to confirm the gospel message that He sent them out to preach and that if people still refused to believe that this message was coming from God that they had been given their chance to be saved and their damnation now totally rested upon themselves because God had gone out of his way to give them reasons to believe.
