Probably not in the next 10 years, but there is definitely a conspiracy of dunces the right and the left in the US working hard to make it happen.

Not with a bang but a whimper.

This is one of the largest remaining questions from the Cold War ever since China became the third nation to successfully pull off a nuclear test in the 1960s (I believe it was the 60's). I'll give the best answer I can to this question, but it remains as of now largely interpretive.

Historical Background of civilizations

Over all of human existence we have seen civilizations emerge, and of these civilizations only a few became superpowers. Egypt, Persia, Greece, Carthage, Rome, Japan, China, Mongolia (during Hunnic times), Russia, Great Britain, France, Germany, Soviet Union. Their stories and triumphs have been told, investigated, picked apart, re-assembled and told again as time has gone on. With every new discovery, we learn more of who we are. Yet, the most controversial thing has never been the rise to power and eclipse of a superpower. The good has never been the greatest selling story. What always remains to be answered is the why. Why did these powers fall into oblivion, their people sunk to a position of servitude under others. Their glory obliterated under the feet of wandering armies and tyrant kings. All civilizations after a period of great prosperity will eventually be toppled, and though influences external to those superpowers always helped, what remains to be discovered is the great and well-heralded Achilles' heel of those civilizations. The one thing that would contribute to their demise the most was usually theirs of the making. Examples:

1. Egypt- Technological advances could only go so far...
2. Persia- Seat of government too far from frontiers to have immediate effect on any developments and crises.
3. Greece- Too ambitious, too quickly
4. Carthage- A captured trireme...the development of the Roman Empire would have been significantly hampered in northern Africa if it were not for this one event.
5. Rome- Expenditures for a barbarian army that eventually turned on them overstretched Imperial resources.
6. Japan- As they say...location, location, location.
7. China- Fought as much with themselves as they did their enemies.
8. Hunnic Mongolia- Even for nomadic horseriders, the amount of territory captured could not be adequately ruled. A disastrous defeat at the hands of Roman Legionnaires didn't help tham any.
9. The last of the Czars killed by their own people...
10. Great Britain- When the natives grow restless...
11. France- Learn to play well with others, and you might actually get away with a conquest every now and then (take the Napoleonic Wars for example).
12. Germany- Two, two-front world wars at the same time...wtf? If they hadnt turned on the Soviet Union on the second war, they might have actually bagged Europe and all of Africa.
13. Soviet Union- Economy couldn't handle the stress of competing with capitalistic US.
14. ???- It is only a matter of time before the next great civilization falls. In my opinion, it is either the US, China, or Russia.

Economic Impacts

In 2000, we drew out twice the amount of resources from the earth than it could naturally replace in a year. It has been estimated that in another 45 years, that will increase to 5x that figure. As we draw out those resources to the breaking point, and strict trade controls are made necessary, the countries with the largest consuming habits will fall. China, the US and Russia are among the top in that category along with France, the UK, Italy, Germany, and Japan. When those civilizations fall to meet the meager countries in position...who knows.

The All-important question

If these declines are severe enough, could a third-world country have the clout to take on one of these superpowers in a fair battle and win?

As to the question of an invasion...not immediately. We have 14 or 15 carrier groups, nuclear missile-armed submarines, enough nuclear weapons to destroy the earth 10 times over, and one of the largest, most technologically advanced militaries in the world. At our current state of awareness it would be suicide.

Sure they can for two reasons alone: 1) they have the numbers and 2) we don't have many people left in this country willing to fight. Go out sometime and look around whether it is in school, the mall, at work, where ever. Take a look at all the people and tell me how many you honestly feel would take up arms to protect this country. I have a hard time finding 1 in 100. People don't care anymore. We will vanish because of this.

Demand American products. The problem that we have in Michigan is that no one is really buying American manufactured products any more, and with all of the baby boomers retiring soon, and switching to a service economy the skills will be lost. Think in a few years we won't be able to build the best machines in the world, and we will then become a less independent country.

Civilizations come and go. The US can't escape this fact, eventually it won't be the dominant force it is today. As to who will be the next big leader is up for opinion and fate. Could be China, Korea or any other nation on the planet. But really I don't think China wants to "Overun" the US, that's American paranoia at it's best. They think "everyone" wants to take them over. Used to be Russia they thought wanted to take over.
