Three months wages is a load of hooey! If you're in love, you need to decide how much materialism will you let enter your relationship. I would much rather see fiances get a good solid financial footing because that will help your marriage last longer. Many divorces come up over finances and everybody trying to keep up with everybody else. Dont spend more than you can comfortably afford and dont finance it. Hold off a few months and save up the money prior to purchasing.
Believe me, two of my sisters got huge engagement rings and they are divorced. I spent $1400 back in 1992 and I'm still married. I think I was making about $15 an hour at the time. If you and your partner can only be happy with a big expense financed to the hilt, then I think you are in for some serious issues down the road. Maybe you should agree on a something reasonable or look for other partners,

It all depends on what you can afford and what your tastes are.
My e-ring was bought on a budget because we were both in college at the time and were paying for our wedding/HM ourselves. I found one I liked at store that was about $400 and found the exact one online for $100. It is white gold with tanzanite and diamonds. It isn't flashy, but it is exactly what I wanted. We couldn't afford a diamond, and I really didn't want one.
We plan to "upgrade" at about the 5 year mark, and I will keep my original e-ring for my daughter.
People say "x month's salary", but if you can't afford it, don't do it. My SIL had 3 different rings because she kept making him buy better ones over time...and they still broke up. Go with something you can afford and she likes. It all means the same thing...it's a life together, not just a sparkly ring.

The tradition is three months pay.
My ring was just under $400 dollars. My fiance took me to every jewelry store in town I picked my ring and believe me he was shocked at three months pay I could have had a ring worth over $20000. I wanted a Sapphire (I don't really like diamonds I'm a colour girl) and white gold band. I got a princess cut Sapphire with 6 diamond chips up the sides. When I saw it I knew it was the one. (He has bought me the earrings and necklace to match since) My wedding band is made of Tungsten (I liked the strength) and it cost $45 with shipping (appraised at $885) it also had the white gold look but easier to maintain.

My engagement ring was around 700 - solitaire with shoulder stones.
Just a note: don't listen to those who say you "have to" pay one, or two or three months' worth of your salary for an engagement ring. The two months' salary thing was a marketing campaign by jewellery stores.
There are beautiful rings for 200 and up. Honestly. Real mature women don't need thousands of dollars of diamonds on their finger as proof of your love for them!

Bought my fiance's engagement ring for about $450 from a pawn shop. We saw one similar to it in a jewelly store and it was on sale for $1250. We have both been married previous and know of the expenses and so choose to go there for the purchase. And the most important thing is that she is extremely happy with it. Bought both of our wedding rings at pawn shop also and was a huge saving again.

I never wanted a huge diamond ring or a three-stone diamond ring as my engagement ring. Me and my fiance decided to get a diamond band.
It's a 1/4 CT. T.W. Princess Cut Colorless Diamond Channel Band in 18K White Gold
He paid around $850 that was with insruance. (Incase a stone falls off, cratches etc.)
Originally it was $700
Here's a picture of it

we were pretty broke when we decided to get married and my ring only cost 100$...his was about the same. Its not a typical engagement/wedding ring..its from a place called james avery ( you can go to thier site online jamesavery.com) Its silver with a blue saphire in the center..looks almost like a tension setting. very pretty.

i met my wife of 18 years now when i was just 16, we were together for just 12 months when she fell pregnant with our unplanned beautiful twin daughters, we were so in love, we were just 17 and were 100% keeping our kids and staying together despite all the usual "live your life 1st and enjoy yourselves" i inevitabely proposed and we had very little money due to the pregnancy.I bought her a ring that cost just £25.00 which was a lot of money to us at the time, it was the thought that counted and she treasures it to this day even though i continually ask to replace it with a more valuable ring, she says that she would never swap it for a million pounds, as i say if she loves you so much then buy what you can afford, do not under any circumstances go into debt, believe me she will love it if she truly loves you.
ps:i hope you are very happy together

if you take what DeBeers says, its two months salary. i don't know about this whole 3 months thing, and DeBeers have the market cornered on diamonds.
that being said, my fiance did the two months thing, bought my ring for about $4500. its a 1 carat center stone flanked by two smaller marquise stones with channel set baguettes going down each side of the band. 1 1/2 ctw in 18k gold. it looks like a flower.
i was expecting him to spend much less, but he had other plans.

My appraisal is for 3,695.00. He bought it for $3000. It is 3/4 karat set in 14 karat white gold with a ruby on each side of the diamond. it is also princess cut. I love it because it is simple, yet elegant and beautiful. If it was fake, I would still be happy because he designed it himself, and I had no idea what it looked like and that was the most fun of all. Let it come from your heart, who cares how much it costs!
