Because there are people in the world who earn it, and some who won't get the point unless you shove it down their throat with some barbs attached. Because no two people are alike, and whereas some learn best by hearing, others learn best by seeing. The same applies to rudeness - some learn through politesse, and others don't learn until you swear at them.

Hell if I know -why-, though.

I used to try not to be mean to anybody, but some people are just so mean that if you are kind to them they will walk all over you. So I have learned to be firm and set boundaries and yes, sometimes be mean, but only if I have to, to get through to them.

Usually its a reaction to what one perceive is the atitude of the other person. We don't live in a vacuum. We react to other people's behaviour towards us.

Some people deserve it. I'm usually mean to people who are thoughtless, uncaring, and above all selfish. They deserve it.
