It might be nice to give your child an ethnic name that reflects your background and heritage. Also, you could give your daughter a name from another language or culture that is not your own. By the way, I feel there is nothing wrong with giving your child an unusual or unique name. Just make sure it is something both you and her can live with and have fun picking names.

Oh gosh, how I'm getting soooo bored with "unusual" names.
Mine is different, rather than unusual. It's French and it's quite a common name in France (even has it's own fashion house)! BUT it's considered "unusual" here and I hate most of the comments I get. People are always correcting my own pronunciation of it!!! Or saying," Aileen, Sealing, Ceiling etc". I hated the attention when I was a child & people asking and correcting it. It's a little bit better since Celine Dion became famous, only now I get idiots asking if my mother called me after her.......I'm at least 10 years older than her!!! And I don't want to be associated with her anyway.
Rant over.....when I was pregnant I wanted Genevieve for a girl so I could call her Eve or Gigi. Our surname begins with G so her initials would have been GG. Genevieve is also french so follows mine and was also around in the 40s as an English name. But we had a boy and love Thomas Edward (after both deceased great-grandfather and grandfather respectively.
Bring back the old names, that's what I say!!! And don't burden your child with the possiblity of bullying/lack of friends and endless questions about his/her name by choosing something ridiculous!
Good luck.........Celine

I loved the name Lorien but my hubby didnt so we picked an old fashioned name which is also a bit unusual in this day which is Isabel. I think the older names are lovely and most are unusual now.
If you read why not have a look through your books and see if any names stand out they normally have some good ones!

Why does it have to be unusual? Just pick a name that you both can live with for the rest of her life. As a teacher, I hear SO MANY crazy names for kids that I feel sorry for many of them. Some even struggle to pronounce and spell their names correctly...give the kid a break and name her something pretty, feminine, and not too unusual. Remember....a child with a common or ordinary name doesn't have to be a common or ordinary child. Think about it.

When you say an 'unusual name', don't you mean a 'ridiculous name'? Why saddle the poor child with a silly name'? What's wrong with things like Christine, or Sarah?
Then again - if you come from a poor background, why not call her 'Reebok' or 'Addidas' or 'Gucci'? That's what other poor people are naming their children, unfortunately

It has to be said though this should be a personal, well meant decision. Remember that what you name this person will stick with them for the rest of their lives.
My sisters has a ten year old girl and before she was born she said she was calling her Bridget after a relative, and so she did against my objections, now at ten, she's slightly smaller than the average girl and gets called Bridget the Midget by her "friends". So think wisely :-)
I've also heard some really strange names.
A brother and sister called Chess and checkers! been one.
In years to come when she says, why did you pick that name, what will you say?

Why does everyone want an "unusual" name for their child? Why not bring back a classic name like:
Grace
Olivia
Madelyn
Catherine
Betty
Your little girl won't always be little. Give her a strong beautiful name that she can proud of not just something "cute" and "unusual".
Congratulations and Good Luck!

Why would you want her name to be unusual? Try getting a baby names book at the library. It will have loads of unique names as well as the normal ones and their meanings, so you name her something that means something special to you. And please don't name her anything too weird, the kids at school tend to be a bit cruel to people with strange names.
