I want to start golfing, and the first thing I need are some clubs, so what is my best bet, spend a lot of money on name brand clubs, buy some cheaper off-brand clubs(clubs are clubs right?), or go to a place like Play-it-Again sports and try to pick up a nice used set?

And FYI, I'm lefty (if that helps at all).

Lefty or righty doesnt matter, welcome to this great game.

I would say you should get a used set of clubs and regrip them and play untill you develope a fairly consistant swing, maybe about 5 rounds, Then get to your local golf pro and seek some advice and several lessons, do this befor you ingrain to many bad habits.

After a few lessons you then may want to continue and now should get to a better set of clubs because there is a big difference in clubs.

Cavity back - more forgiving
Forged - better feedback on misshits
Blades - maximum feedback on solid or misshits.

Also the shaft flex is important for your individual swing.

All these things can be checked out by your local pro.

Good luck and good golfing.

I suggest going to Play-it-Again and buying a used set. You'll probably be able to get a decent set for a cheap price. Even as you get better, you may not find the need to upgrade for a long time. In my experience there IS some difference between good clubs and totally cheap ones (even for a beginner) so this will help you get started a little easier. I recommend Calloway clubs because of their well known forgiveness (these things are REALLY forgiving).

Being a lefty should help you get an even better deal so good luck learning the game!

Totally do Play-it -Again. There are a million people who take up the game (even lefties), buy nice clubs and then quit. So places like Play-it-Again always have tons of nearly new, nice clubs at good prices. This way you get clubs to use while you decide if you really want to pursue the sport without the big expense of new clubs. Then if you like the sport, and really learn how to play you'll be ready to buy a new set that caters to your game. And if not ... they go back to Play-it-Again to rejoin the millions of other unwanted clubs.

I would NOT go to Pay It Again sports for your equipment as there are plenty of places ( Craigslist , Ebay , Ect ) that offer used equipment at a fair price. I would recommend getting at least middle of the road
quality though....Tommy Armour or Adams Golf come to mind.

Buy a cheap whole lady set with bag and putter for less than 200 dollars. Get a good Pro that promise to take you on a couple of rounds. Play this set for two years, sell them on ebay, and then you'll know which set you really want to settle with.

I would say your best bet is to buy cheaper clubs to find out if you like the sport. If you find you do, then you might want to start looking for some decent clubs as an investment. Plus, you don't want to put an idiot mark on the top of you brand new expensive clubs. lol

Just buy cheap, because for you a club is a club and you want to make sure you like the game first. Try if you can get a set of cavity back, or anything cheap.
