Don't forget Leavenworth. The US prison system is worse than a third world country's. They should put the prisoners at Gitmo in the general population of a regular US prison (esp Rikers) and see how long they last.

Alcatraz, in the Federal system. Convicts were locked up 24 hours a day. Work was considered a privilege. This prison housed some of the most incorrigible criminals of that time.

Alcatraz is likely the most notorious. But certainly not the worst; many ex-convicts considered their stay there as "good time", at least in the later days of the prison.
