I know she will have money and benefits, but I don't know if it's for her. She's really girly and has never even held a gun. I just don't think she would like living in tents and eating MREs.

I would help her explore the idea and make sure the recruiters don't pull a fast one by getting her into something she doesn't really want. If you have a base nearby, call them up and see about arranging a visit. Make sure she understands the good and the bad & makes an informed decision. How good it can be and how dangerous it can be.

See if you can buy an MRE and you both can try it together. Show her how to pitch a tent, sleep in a sleeping bag, take her hiking!

If she's not physically active, remind her how demanding the military can be and start working out with her.

Help her out and let her make an informed choice.

NO! PLEASE, talk her out of joining the military. Money for college is not worth getting yourself killed for an insane war, when there are many other available options.
If she wants money for college, direct her towards information about Federal Aid (fafsa.edu), Scholarships & Grants, Loans, Community College.
If she wants to travel around the world, tell her to join something like the Peace Corps.
If she wants to serve her country, tell her to volunteer or join AmeriCorps.

Tell her it's not for her, or better yet, have a veteran give her a non-sugar-coated version of what the military is REALLY like. I was with a Marine for 5 years and some of the things I've heard would make you gag.

Do it! Let her join. Maybe it will knock some sense into her. Really it isnt like John Kerry said only idiots join the Army. The United States Military is respectable. You recieve great lessons, and become a patriot by fighting for your country!

do it Lady

ask her why she wants to join. if she want to serve her country and defend our way of life then by all means go for it. if it's for college money try some other avenues before the military. movies are not a very accurate representation of of the military so don't use those for any decision making, and yes she may go to war, but the odds of getting injured or dying are less than her getting in a car wreck, and that's a fact. if you haven't served in the military you probably shouldn't be throwing your opinion around because you just don't know what it's about, and yes i'm in the army been in for 6 years, been to war and got a purple heart. i'm proud to serve and proud of all those that i serve with and have served with. good luck with your decision.

How does it feel to have a sister with more guts than you? Why don't you join? It sounds like you could use the experience. I spent 30 years in the US Marines and would not change a thing. I'm proud of my service to this great country. And to your sister I would say this, If you want to join for the right reasons then go for it. I wish you the best and It makes me proud that we still have young people who are willing to do what is right to protect this country. God Bless,Semper Fi. And to all of you that are responding in a negative way, who do you think has fought to save your right to live in such a great country?

That is what basic training is all about, to train her how to do all of those things she doesn't know how to do. Maybe she wants to do something different and be more independent. The military will help that. See if you can arrange for her to talk to some soliders and watch the movie Full Metal Jacket. When my brother went into the Marines, they told him to watch that movie to see what boot camp was about.

No way. Military is a last resort, when you can't get any other job. Do you think she would be able to kill someone? If not, she shouldn't join the military. Also with the conflicts in Iraq, it is likely that she will be injured or die.

There are so many career fields in the military now that she may never be in harm's way, She could learn to be a Dr., Nurse, secretary, Mechanic, ect..ect..ect..

She is lucky to have the choice, I was 4F and could not go in.

She will find out, but one thing the drill instructors are really good at is getting you to do what they tell you too, so she probably wont think about it much, once in the fray.
