We see three common causes of "scooting" or dragging the bottom along rough surfaces.
The first is impacted anal sacs. While many dogs can express their anal sacs by dragging their rectum along the ground it is quicker to express them manually. Many vets will show owners how to do this if asked.
The second is tapeworm infestation. Tapeworms release muscular segments that exit the rectum and move around spreading tapeworm eggs into the environment. These appear to cause pretty severe itching in some dogs. They can usually be seen in the stool or haircoat when they first exit the rectum as small (1/2 to 3/4th inch) moving objects. If they are missed in the active stage, they dry up and look like rice granules stuck in the hair around the rectum.
The last is allergic disease -- flea allergy being the most common allergy leading to itching around the base of the tail and rectal region.

Because something doesn't "feel right" back there. Essentially, they're wiping. There are a couple of possibilities.
1) They feel like they've got something hanging back there and they're trying to scrape it off
2) It itches and they've got worms. Collect a stool sample in a baggie for the vet if they keep doing this. Medicine clears that right up.
3) Dogs have a gland in their anus, not quite a scent gland, but it helps with lubing up the poo. Sometimes that gland has issues, like it has a clog or is irritated. Once I had to take in my dog and have the vet squeeze it out because the gland had a clog. Quick procedure, not that bad.
Basically, your dog has butt issues. :) See a vet if it continues.

Dogs drag there butts on the ground to scratch it cuz it does get itchy, and they don't wanna (and can't) scratch it, and obviously you don't want to, so they use the ground to scratch that itch.

Worms, anal glands, or poop stuck to their fur around their butt. Or, if your dog has been eating grass, or something fibrous it might be that a piece is stuck.

Dogs don't use toilet paper. They have to clean their bottoms that way, messing up the carpet.
I once saw a woman wipe a dog's butt with toilet paper in public. And looked so humiliating for the poor dog.

It is the anal glands, take em to the vet or learn how to clean them yourself, it has nothing to do with worms or wiping after poo

Often it means that their anal glands need to be expressed. A groomer or vet can do that for you.
Sometimes mine will "wipe" their butts after they've had a poop.

I think your dogs have worms, or backed up anal glands, i know it sounds gross, but the vet will be able to tell.

lil worms/germs get in there and it tends 2 get really irritating and itchy. thats y they use the floor and ground 2 scracth there butts.
