My dog got her tail stuck in the door tues night. I took her to the vet on wed and the cleaned up and bandaged it and gave her antiobiotics. The problem i am having is whenever she wags her tail the bandage falls off right away. Even after the vet wrapped it it fell off as soon as we got home. Now it looks like it is starting to get infected even though i am putting neopsporn on it as instructed. They told me if this does not work we will have to have a few inches of her tail taken off. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the bandage on or any thoughts on having some of the tail removed. I think it is horrifying but the vet seems to think it would not be that bad and is fairly common. Thanks sorry so long

The way i am wrapping it is:
putting the neosporen on a telfa (a ouchless non adherent pad) then putting gauze over that then putting tape over that. It still slides right off even when the vet did it. She told me to wait a week of doing that before making any decisions about haveing the tail removed

Unfortunately, it is difficult to get tails to heal because they are so hard to bandage, and because the dog often keeps wagging so the tail bangs on things and the wound opens up again.

I've known a couple of dogs who had their tails amputated for this reason. One was an Irish Wolfhound, he looked like the world's largest Bouvier once his tail was docked.

Anyways, hopefully you can avoid it, but if you do have to remove part or all of the tail the dog will be fine and probably won't notice.

Keeping the tail bandaged is almost impossible. Having to treat a constant infection in her tail is not comfortable for your dog and has the possibility of becoming much worse, even to the point of amputating more of her tail. Listen to your vet and do the amputation now, it will heal and she will feel much better.

Check with your Vet first but if your Vet okays it, then you might want to cover the wound area with some sterile gauze roll and then cover the gauzed area and the area surrounding it with some Pet Wrap that can be bought at PetSmart and probably other pet stores too, but don't know who else carries it, and wrap that where you wrapped with gauze and on either side beyond the gauze covering. Then you hold it for a minute and it sticks really good.

Maybe you could try to use a self-stick ace bandage ontop of your banadaging.

I've seen a lot of people who use that type of thing to bandage their dogs tails because they've hurt them on their crates, or have bitten them from chewing.

Check with your vet though. The wound can't breathe through the ace bandage.

This is a very common incident with long tailed dogs, they best thing you could do for your dog is have its tail removed, this would also cause the least suffering

LEAVE IT *ALONE*!!!

Don't bother to bandage it AT ALL! The more you FUSS,the worse it'll be. If dog won't leave it alone, put an E-Collar on it.

Dogs do NOT need their tails. Docking is NO BIG DEAL!!!
