The term itself is self explanatory.
Daylight saving was introduced to temperate countries because daylight duration's seasonal changes. Tropical countries do not have obvious changes in daylight duration due to these seasonal changes; therefore it is not a common practice there.
Daylight saving optimises the time spent during daylight so that the day time can be used in a more efficient and effective way.

It was introduced in Britain during the First World War to maximise the amount of daylight available for practical use. This was an attempt to increase productivity of the factory workers and farmers, hence helping the war effort.

After the war the idea stuck and was adopted across Europe and North America.

Since the days get shorter-gets dark about 1 and 1/2hs arlier and stays dark longer esp when school buses ar on the road picking children up to take to school and children are at bus stops waiting for the buses and so its actually for a safety factor that this time change occurs. With the time change it is light when the children leave homes to walk to the bus stops and the buses are on the highways and interstates-much safer.
