even though it is reinforced battalion? could a meu(soc) establish a beachhead against a regiment-size heavily fortified enemy on a beach ALONE?

That is one of the top capabilities of a Marine Expeditionary Unit. It is one of the reasons why the Marine Corps is structured as it is today. It is meant to be able to invade a hostile shoreline, secure a beachead and hold off enemy counterattacks until the main assault waves arrive.

It is possible. Don't forget that while the MEU(SOC) is only a reinforced infantry battalion, they are Marines (yes, my prejudices are showing), and their ships would travel with a Naval battle group (1-2 LHA/LHD, several troop carriers, 1-2 cruisers, 2-4 destroyers and 2-4 frigates, possibly a submarine), and there will be a carrier battlegroup somewhere in the vicinity do deliver air support and additional naval gunfire support if necessary.

Yes, that is what they are trained for. The BIG question is how long would you expect them to hold said beach without follow-on forces.

A MEU has integrated Close Air Support capabilities as well as Naval Gunfire Support. So who's the target... A MEU can open the beachhead, secure it, and then hold for quick Embassy EVAC, punitive raid, or follow on forces.

Yes, but it would have to be a small beach.
