In Medieval times, the Isle of Dogs was known as Stepney Marsh and in the 13th Century was drained to support meadows and pastures as well as cornfield.

- The name Isle of Dogs supposedly came about because there were royal kennels in the area.

What follows is a quote, I favour the latter:

The Isle of Dogs is situated some distance downriver from the original City of London. The origin of its name is unclear. It is first mentioned on a map from 1588, and it has been speculated that Henry VIII, whose Palace of Placentia stood in Greenwich on the other side of the river, had his hunting dogs kennelled there. Another theory is that the name is a corruption of "Isle of docks" referring to the many jetties around the peninsula.

The Canary Islands are so called because when the Spanish first discovered the place, it was alive with wild dogs so they called it Islas de Canares meaning Islands of Dogs (I stand to have my Spanish corrected here!). The Canaries did quite a bit of trade with London via a particular wharf that took its name from the islands: Canary Wharf. The island on which this wharf was located took its name from that connection; the translation being reversed back into English - Isle of Dogs.
