Dude ~
You really didn't give to much information about yourself to give any kind of advice. Do you do any sports now (I don't like to use the word "PLAY" when it comes to sports) and if so which ones? Do you have a background in boxing? Do you run? How much do you weigh? How tall are you? How old are you? Have you ever been to a boxing gym? Do you have a Trainer?

Without knowing anything about you, here's what advice I can give to you.... Run you can never run enough, three minute rounds can seem like a lifetime when someone else is trying to rip your head off. The one thing that will amaze you is, how heavy 12oz gloves can become after a minute. Run with your hands up. Run with your hands down. Run and throw punches. Run backwards and once you're done doing that run some more. between 3 to 5 miles is good, nothing more you're not training for a marathon, you're training to become a boxer.

Sit-ups! You can never do enough sit-ups! Have you ever been hit in the stomach and thought that you were going to die? It's not a good feeling and no matter how much you try to catch your breath, your breath comes back when it wants to and not a second sooner and definitely not soon enough.

Build a good base, do these two things before you start going to a boxing club and give the trainers there something to work with, often times trainers start off with guys/girls that really don't have a clue. Find a Gym and a Trainer that you are comfortable with, if you're not comfortable with your trainer, it will never work. Once you have a Trainer that you can work with and one that can work with you listen to everything he tells you, do what he tells you. Work on everything he tells you at home on your own and show him that you are dedicated.

I wish you luck and hope that this sport takes you as far as you are willing to go. Peace, Dude.

Dude - In order to give you a helpful answer to the 2 questions you asked it would depend on what type of physical condition you are in right now. And what weight classification you are aspiring to fight in.

Dude,
1. Cardio
2. footwork and roadwork
3. Endless bagwork

too much weight training will bind you up and slow your reflexes
