Certainly your dog won't die from eating small amounts of chocolate, but look at the larger picture here. I am a certified pet nutrition counselor and you should keep in mind how giving pets people food (especially candy) is harmful to their health. Take a 40-lb dog and feed it some cookies. You know how those cookies affect your weight and the average person would weigh 3 to 4 times more than that dog. So, when you give a dog a cookie it is like you are feeding them a cake or a cheeseburger. Obesity is a leading cause of disease in pets, just like people, so keep your pet healthy by giving them treats designed for dogs, not people.

Chocolate is bad for a dog. It can be toxic to a small dog or in large amounts to any dog and it's especially dangerous if it is Baker's chocolate. I wouldn't worry about a dog getting ahold of a few cookies unless it was loaded with baker's chocolate.
I had a large 125 lb German Shepherd Dog that ate a whole bag of wrapped chocolate bar miniatures. The Vet said to watch her but if anything she might just get a bit of Diarrhea but had it been Baker's Chocolate he would have been worried, or had she been a small dog.
She was fine. Didn't even get diarrhea.

The amount of chocolate in a cookie won't kill a dog. You'd want to race to the vet if they ate the same amount of Baker's chocolate or similar. But the flour and other stuff in a cookie won't aggravate the dog. It's totally not OK to let a dog have something like this as a treat, though! Caffeine, chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions - these are all very, very bad for dogs.

I've read and heard many people say that chocolate is deadly for dogs, but I have a miniature chihuahua that ate a few chocolates from a Valentine's Day chocolate box, and she was fine. As long as they do not eat too much chocolate (depending on the dog), it should be fine. Make sure to double check with your vet about that though.

Chocolate IS poisonous for dogs.
the toxic compound in it is called theobromine, and is a methylxanthine compound, similar to caffiene. so will cause twitching, hyper activity, and at extreme doses collapse and death.
realistically however Chocolate poisoning is VERY RARE.
depends on the size of your dog, but most importantly the concentration of the toxic agent in the chocolate.
normal candy has a pretty low cocoa solids content, so the amound an average sized dog would need to eat is huge.
however the 1 and only serious case opf chocolate poisoning i have seen was a 4lb yorkshire terrier, after eating 1/2 bar of that expensive gourmet chocolate with 76% cocoa solids. and yes he was really really ill.
so, do i recomend giving chocolate to your dog ...? NO
but if it eats 1 or 2 pieces. well will probably be ok. if its a small dog, lots of chocolate and very dark chocolate, call your vet

Go to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center web site.
Chocolate is dangerous depending on the size of the dog and the amount of chocolate.

Chocolate is deadly to a dog, some chemical in the chocolate can kill the dog, they can't have any chocolate, not even a cookie, they should stick to dog food.

I looked this up once because my dog accidently ate a chocolate chip...its because chocolate contains a Xanthine compound, Theobromine, Caffeine & Theophylline...which is like poison to dogs. Dogs love chocolate but they should NOT eat it. So don't feed it to your dog! If it gets too much, it WILL die.

chocolate is not good...a whole chocolate bar can be toxic to a small dog...they don't process foods the same way humans do...
they are carnivores anyway...better to keep their treats meat based...candy isn't good for humans...why would we think it was any better for our pets or animal companions?
"The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline."

Chocolate is really bad for dogs. It acts like a poison in their systems and they should not digest it at all. Small amounts probably won't cause severe damage, maybe gas and diarrhea but a large amount is deadly.
