I noticed that several people who seem knowledgable and compassionate are getting thumbs for nearly accurate answers that are very obvious to just about everyone. Why are they doing it? Does it affect the overall points? I think they are personally useless and annoying because it hides those who get two or more thumbs down, which may be giving a good answer. Errghhhh!

It's sad that people find it necessary to do this and I hope Yahoo get's rid of this option as I think it is more of a hindrance.

Hi there...This is a topic which is being highly debated in the forum due some of the abuse of the thumbs down option.

If you get a "Best answer," each thumbs up will give you 1 point. However, thumbs down has no DIRECT impact on your score. (i.e. you don't lose points for thumbs down).

However, after the updates they made on a few weeks ago, the default for all users is to HIDE answers that have 2 thumbs down. This is very controversial because there has been a lot of abuse of thumbs down (i.e. people giving thumbs down when they shouldn't) and hence a lot of valid answers are being hidden. You can change your default to "show all answers" via the pull down menu above the answers, and it will save your default setting. But, most users aren't aware of this.

Regarding why people give thumbs down, that varies. Why do others use thumbs down? Well there is a wide array of behaviour. Some probably use it for any of the following:

- Some just give thumbs down to everyone (and some are doing this now even more since it will hide the answers to most users)

- Some find users they don't like users, and they specifically target all of their answers w/ thumbs down

- Some try to skew the selection of "Best answers" by giving all answers but their own a thumbs down.

- Some use it for opinions they don't agree with - this happens often in the more controversial sections such as Religion or politics.

- And, some hit thumbs down by accident (I have seen many people ask the Yahoo team for an "undo" option because this happens often).

Because of many of these abuses, many users are upset by the new ratings filter.

If you would like to read more about it in the forum and/or contribute your thoughts, here are 2 threads you may find of interest.

SUBJECTIVE JUDGEMENT MAY BE THE ROOT CAUSE OF THUMBS-DOWN IN SOME CASES.
(Sorry for using the CAPS, a rude manner indeed, but I wanted to make a strong point out of it)

You see, people would like to make things look like the way they want to see as per their preconceived perception. I can not vouch that I am above this fault. But if one is aware of the differences between subjective analysis and an objective analysis, then the result of their judgment is near to accurate.

By the way, I would also like to congratulate "♪♫ Seattle ♫♪" (above) for providing one of the best answer that i have read along with many others who also gave part of what ♪♫ Seattle ♫♪ wrote. There are some very good suggestions like

Quote: “And, some hit thumbs down by accident (I have seen many people ask the Yahoo team for an "undo" option because this happens often).”

Will YAT do something about this proposal, if not others as put forward by so many here?

i imagine it really is precisely what occurred there. Bunch of youngsters. ;) i absolutely do no longer provide thumbs down till the answer is thoroughly rude, or the answer is giving suggestion that should be risky quite than powerful. eta: If each person has ever puzzled why diverse human beings make our questions and solutions inner most, they are going to comprehend the rationalization when they examine moondog's reaction. Its unhappy how bored human beings are with their lives.

It has become very annoying, agreed. I don't bother with thumbs down, what difference does it make? I will give a thumbs up though when I totally agree with an answer. Okay, bring on the thumbs down......thank you very much.

You can still get Best Answer without thumbs down affecting your answer if the person asking the questions elects to choose your response. I am sure there are people that just like having some sense of power in their lives and can't resist the thumbs down option, sort of imagining themselves like Caesar at the end of a gladiator fight, and feel special for rating something thumbs down. To me the exception is when someone posts something blatantly mean and the question didn't call for it.

Yeah, I've noticed, but you can click a space to open up those answers that are hidden and read them, if you wish. Been noticing that three answers, almost identical, one gets a thumbs down, one gets ignored, and one gets a thumbs up. It isn't that people are copying, but due to the mechanics of the web site. One person types faster, so they get posted first. No bother.

Just chalk it up to the fact that this is the internet, and some needy folks are out there trying to get attention. Some people need to be stars, and some are content to offer what they know and let it go at that. I think it's pretty childish when it extends into questions about cat litter preferences, but, Oh Well!

It's too bad, because the whole point of this board was, I thought, supposed to be about sharing information to help animals.

Ah hah!!!! I noticed it too!!! Isn't that just stupid? I've been reading some Q's and A's and people with great answers have tons of thumbs down. I almost questioned this myself. Perhaps some people just don't have respect for others opinions. On other sites, say the parenting site, this doesn't happen often at all, but here it does all the time!!! Pet owners are not always the nicest people, they can be downright rude! Thanks for mentioning it and pointing it out.

I thumbs down answers that are inaccurate. I thumbs down questions that are poorly asked or are in an inappropriate section, such as this one.

Change your settings to "view all answers" and it won't hide the poorly rated answers.
Good answers get thumbs down because some people can't handle the truth.
