Usually if you like a guy, you already have some sort of familiarity with him and know his general personality. If you're afraid of getting your feelings hurt than something about his personality and how he reacts to you is already telling you that he's not going to give the kind of answer you're hoping for. If he's a decent guy than he'll give an honest asnwer and its up to you on how you take it. The better you know the person the more vibes you'll be able to get of whether or not they'll be receptive to a closer relationship. Thing is, telling someone you like them (or love them) doesn't mean much, it's more with how you treat them and how they treat you. He should already have a clue that you like him, unless you've been sending mixed signals, in which case he's gonna stick with the default that you're not into him, and you have to clearly spell it out for him.
If you thinks he's going to respond with an answer other than what you were hoping for, then you shouldn't say anything to him. You'll only get disapointed and hurt if you can't handle the truth.

hehe well first i think you must excersice patience, but I know what your talking about... hmm... this is hard... I really don't think you can avoid the situation that you just don't like him anymore, you should tell him that people think you two are a couple because he hangs around you so much, and say "i dont think we should hang aroudn each other so much, because people are saying things"

You could always write him a letter, or email him. But if you want to tell it to him, you could always start off with "Hey I like you!" and just walk away, and let him think about it, or you could wait there for the response. I had a guy come up to me one time at my locker, and he told me straight up "Hey, I think you're cute!" and then he walked away without waiting for a response. I liked that, and it kept me on my toes, to see whether he really liked me or not. GOOD LUCK!!!

You tell him you like him without expectation.
If your feelings are hurt because he doesn't like you back, that's not his fault, it's your fault for having unrealistic expectations. There's no need to take it personally.
No one can hurt your feelings without your permission.

if you like him and he doesn't like you back then yes you will get your feelings hurt but don't take it so hard . you have to be ready for the idea that he might not like you back .
