i like white wine but i don't know what brands are good. I also don't want a very expensive one because that doesn't always mean it's a good one.

Get some Canei or Riuniti. They are cheap wines, but to me most expensive wines taste like vinegar.
Just had Riuniti White Lambrusco for Thanksgiving. It's a rose wine (almost the same as their Rosatto which may be a discontinued offering from them I have not seen it in the stores for a while)
We also had Ballatore Spumanti. It's similar to Martini and Rossi Asti Spumanti, but a little sweeter and a lot cheaper, about $7 US for a bottle.

I'm not a big fan of red wine, so I've tried a couple brands of white wine.

I found the Yellow Tail brand of wine to be very good - and VERY cheap - about $10 for a bottle. You can find it at an grocery store.

Or, if you want to get very cheap (and kind of unclassy, lol) get Franzia boxed wine. The white and blush wine are REALLY good, plus you can keep the box in your refrigerator for a while with that tap on. My roommate and I get that a lot just to keep in the fridge...but dont tell anyone, haha.

I'm more of a red wine fan but I had the same issue awhile back... I'd start with asking yourself if you like dry or sweet (fruity) wine. If you don't know, start with the staples like Chardonnay, Reisling, Pinot/Chenin Blanc, Gewurtstraminer (sp?)

Wine is classified by the predominant grape that goes into it unless it is a mix which exceeds the industry standard, then it becomes a "table wine" which is less expensive. Find the type of grape that tickles your pallet and go for the table version.

Start with the slightly sweeter fruitier wines.

You might like Gewurztraminer, a German style slightly sweet somewhat fruity white wine, available in the 5-7 dollar range for reasonably decent stuff.

Or if in California, try "Two Buck Chuck" from Trader Joe's . Not great stuff, but CHEAP.

Wine is more about grape and year than brand.
The vintage years are those with particulary hot summers,so the grapes ripened well, produced the most sugar which then produced the most alcohol. You will have to find that out yourself
Pinot Grigio- dry
Chablis-dry
Chenin Blanc-medium dry
