most likely you have one of his book plates if you Lock closely you will see that the signature is printed in the paper along with the rest Of it. His lithos were used in publications a great deal while he was alive if it happens to be a painting instead of something on paper then go to artcyclopedia and look up his name then go to any gallery on the web that has his work and e-mail them with a pic of it but above all enjoy it

A 'piece of art'? Do you mean an offset lithograph? A limited edition print? A painting? Perhaps if you were actually specific we could give you more info.
