Jesus did not see elijah and moses, his disciples saw a vision of Jesus talking to elijah and moses.\
the reason for this vision was in direct response to to scripture preceding this event. That is, that Jesus had told his disciples that they would not die until they saw him in Kingdom Glory.
Any and all spirit contacts are in fact demons impersonating the living that have died. To attempt to communicate with them is to risk demonic influence.
Beware.

First off I'm Jewish so I will try to answer your question from that perspective. Also, I don't know a lot so I will also answer from a very limited knowledge.

Once an Orthodox Rabbi said that the body and soul of a living person is like a horse and a rider. The rider wills the horse to go somewhere and the horse obeys and takes the rider there. A horse is the animal that must eat, sleep, and defecate. The rider is like the soul that controls the horse. So if the horse dies, the rider must leave the horse. But since the horse served the rider well, its body should receive honor and respect from the rider because without it the rider could not do what needed to be done.

In order to do good deeds and be a righteous person you must have a body. Your soul wills your body to say write a check to charity, or comfort someone in need. When your body dies and the soul (hopefully) goes to heaven, the body which caused the soul to act righteously must be honored and respected with a proper burial.

I hoped this explained your question from a Jewish perspective.

Slumbering in the grave is highly debatable.

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:8:
8We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

And in 1 Thessalonians 4:16:
16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

This is the question, since they seem to contradict: Does the spirit of a person go to the Lord upon death, and then, in the resurrection described above, receive their glorified physical body? Or are the dead in soul rest until the rapture?

I believe the first option, because when Christ died, many of the saints were seen walking the streets of Jerusalem.

Because in Matthew 27:51-52:
51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.

I believe the graves opening was a supernatural event by God to show that Jesus was, indeed, the Messiah. However, the visualizations were just "representative" or "reflections" of their spirits, for lack of better words. Either way, it proves to me that "soul rest" is not the most convincing of the two theories.

Jesus did not see Elijah and Moses as spirits. Elijah and Moses were dead at the time and according to scripture, when the person dies, absolutely nothing survives. There is no separate thing called spirit or soul which survives death.

This account is called the transfiguration. Elijah and Moses represented or symbolized something but they themselves were not there.

When we die, the whole of us dies. No part of us survives death. If for instance we had something called a soul that survived death, what would be the point of a resurrection? Resurrection is for dead people, yes?

If one is in actual contact with a spirit, it is a wicked spirit, a demon.

Rev.5:11 Angels are vast in number. Angels are spirit creatures.
Rev.12:3,4,6-11,12 A third of the angels are cast out with Satan.
Matt.8:29 The spirits or devils knew who Jesus was. Matt.8:16,31 so they can also go into animals Luke 20:34-46 angels do not die, people are from dust to dust, but if any thing came out of them it was a devil.
The disciples had power over devils Luke 10:1,17,18;
Angels did sin before the flood Jude 6; 1Pet.3:18-20; 2Pet.2:4 they wait for the judgement day and judges 1Cor.6:2,3 AND SO DOES MANKIND WAIT FOR THE JUDGEMENT DAY Heb.9:27 it is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgement.
1Cor.15:22 AS IN ADAM ALL DIE, EVEN SO IN CHRIST SHALL ALL BE MADE ALIVE.
Acts 17:31; 24:15; John 5:20,22,26-29 [ all in the graves will hear the voice of Jesus and come forth ]; Dan.12:2; Isa.26:19 [ the earth will cast out her dead ]; 2Cor.5:10 [ all will stand before the judgement seat of Christ ]; Rom.14:9-12; Philip.2:5,9-12; Man is resurrected to face judgement Acts 2:27-35 Jesus is resurrected and David is still waiting to be resurrected Psm.104:29,30 as if created the dead come forth from the dust. Psm.115:15-17 death is silence 146:2,3 Dead have no thought. James 2:26 The body [ belongs to person ], without the spirit [ the spirit belongs to God ] is dead.

The spirit belongs to God, it is the life of the soul, it returns to God and at resurrection or [ changed in the twinkling of the eye ], or transfigeration as with Elijah and Moses and Luke 8:50,52,54,55 and Eze.37:12-14 the spirit of life from God make them a living soul Num.16:22; Eccl.12:7; Isa 42:5; [ Matt.27:52,53 When Jesus was resurrected the spirit from God to resurrect him also caused saints to come out of their graves to God they are just asleep, it saya they slept, all through the bible this is the expression];

Job 19:25,26 Job expects to see God in his flesh, it may not be the same, but it will be his.

There is no time in the astral plane, which is where you are traveling around in your dreams. You can visit with passed relatives there, and you can even see the future as well. The earth will be here for a long time, and world peace is something we can achieve, and will eventually. The reason we have war and poverty is because of money. We should share everything, and take care of each other. Some of the best daydreams I have are based on a world with no monetary values, just love. Everyone has food because we are not worried where our next meal is coming from. We still learn and go to school and get medical care and have children, but it's all understood, no payment needed. Money is the root of all our troubles.

Evil spirits are powerful beings. They are used by Satan to fool us. One example was Saul. According to 1 ( or 2) Chronicles 10:23,24 an evil spirit pretended to be the long dead Samuel. God punished Saul for doing this.

What Jesus' disciples saw during the transfiguration was a mere vision--or Movie--in our day. Read fully the account of Matthew or Luke.

Yes you are right that the dead knows nothing. Read Eccl 9:5,10; And Isaiah 30:8, etc.

How does one "slumber" in their grave when they no longer have a body? What of the deceased who chose cremation, or those who lose their lives in horrific ways where there is no longer a body to bury?

I have no idea where you learned this soul sleep doctrine but it's false. To be absent from the Body is to be present with the Lord... I think this is part of the cultic teaching of the Watch Tower.. Don't let teachers of false doctrines confuse you.... Jim

Just our bodies "slumber". The Bible says we die, and then comes judgment. Nothing about a long sleep in between. We appear before God in judgment at the moment of our death. Our body, in its glorified state, will rejoin us at the final resurrection, at the end of time.
