I've been a music teacher for a few years and I remember hearing my college professors cringe at the sound of the term "drop your larynx" and an "open throat" because it's so unclear!

A dropped larynx refers to the sensation you feel on the onset of a yawn. Your jaw relaxes (or unhinges), sometimes the eyebrows lift, but it's that deep breath, yawn sensation. When you sing with a "dropped larynx" it creates an "open" warm tone. This is the quality of sound needed to sing with projection, volume, and good, warm tones.

There is nothing forced about it. It's the idea of singing well using a deep low breath, and an open space in the mouth. Imagine creating a space in your mouth big enough to fit the fat end of a pear. It's definitely not your speaking voice (some of us sound like Julia Child's when we try to speak in this register)

This is what I'm working on in voice, since mine is causually very light and soft. The point is to give your sould more depth and power. However, forcing it down too far can be even worse than not "dropping" the larynx at all.

This is actually a complex and somewhat controversial issue. I believe most voice teachers prefer a low laryngeal posture, but it should not be "forced" down, IMO. A good voice teacher will help you with this.

I think it would be deeper and more mechanical sounding
