The purpose of life may have been at one time the survival of the species by reproducing or procreating. That would have been when we were hominids before we crossed the evolutionary plane to human status. Now that we that we possess analytical thought and call ourselves humans we have the responsibility to survive by using this brain to keep the world from destruction. If you're not proactive in the survival of the planet then continue walking on your knuckles and watch the Earth slowly digress.

Actual purpose for life, according to my professor, for living beings would be reproduction and survival. In order to continue the race there needs to be a next generation therefore the purpose of life of all living creatures is to reproduce!

As this question pertains to "Home > Society & Culture > Religion & Spirituality" the purpose of our Earthly lives is Soul Growth through the learning of lessons which are the hardships we each endure in our own distinct way. Thus the Soul can move on to higher Plains of Existence if it learns the lessons given it or it stagnates by not learning those lessons.
Due to limited space here, I have found a link that explains much better than can be done here by anyone:

Including myself.
EDIT:
And another 'interesting' link:

The purpose of life is as individual as a fingerprint, dependent upon personable levels of acceptance and rejection, the materially minded will propose a hedonistic conclusion as being supreme, the spiritually minded will propose a religious conclusion, one thing that is common to all is the pursuit of pleasure, be it material or spiritual, free will being the juncture that will lead you to each and ultimately the value of each path will manifest a degree of pleasure that will decree the validity of purpose for each individual.

I don't think that there necessarily has to be a purpose in life. We are all here by accident and the universe was just a big accident. Is it that hard to accept that there might not be any purpose to this at all?

it appears to be to oppose and destroy God as a LORD and make him into a code.
God=CuTnucil l=C To dI i I
and thats why it says:
God helps those who help themselves.
Cause to rat is a crime
and theives steal ie help themselves and cutoff those that tell on them.
so to prove I AM correct start the worlds largest crime wave off tonight. and get those free presents for your sons and daughters and neices and newfews except for italians they stole enought in the last 2000 years they kind of own it all not Jews or germans.
And as the flaming fire appearing "^ as emerald." I do what I want and tonight i want a crime wave since Mafia of Montreal has left a gap open. Do this for God not organized crime who is lifting the sack and showing the crack. about time the bosses went down and got the urine mouthwash that anceint romans used cause they claim roman roots.

Jesus Christ! He came to save sinners- and give those who believe in Him eternal life- forgiveness of sins- and a life here on earth full of joy and peace- This life is about HIM not us. For this life is passing... There is nothing more important than ones eternal salvation in Jesus Christ!
1 Timothy 1:15
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.
Jesus says " I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but through Me" John 14:6
