I have changed the fuses and also checked for any empty or blown bulbs and replaced them with new ones. But still only half of the string will light up.

Normally this would mean, your strand of lights has a burnt bulb. Its a real pain trying to find. Yet most Christmas lights come with extras just for this case. The bulbs can easily be removed and changed with a new one. Just pull out and pop in a new bulb.

Try this with each bulb, with the strand plugged in the wall, if you happen to come upon a dead bulb, the replacement of the new will turn all your lights on.
Are you strand of lights new? They may be old and you need to buy new ones, or the ones you bought have a messed up electrical wire. If youve just bought these, go back to the store and trade them in for new ones. Most stores will take them and give you another set for free. Lights are so cheap these days, I bought mine for my tree today, and they were only $1.75 at Walmart for a multi colored strand of 100 ft. Check this out and get some lights that work, and save money.

It sounds like a faulty set: I've seen the same thing that sometimes jiggling a bulb would make the dark part light up. The trouble is finding the right bulb, or if there are more than one giving trouble.

well, it's possible to locate the bulb that is the first burnt out one and replace the fuse in it and make all the other ones work. when one fuse is blown, the rest of the chain is down. but the guy above might have a point: maybe throwing them away is a good option if you don't want to remove the bulbs and fuses?
