My dog is having seizures and foaming at the mouth, he's had 3 today and we can't find a vets office thats open. Is he going to be o.k. and is there anything we can do to make them less frequent until tomorrow? Also after he finishes the convulsions he starts breathing really rough. Would him having all these seizures effect his general well being? Oh and another thing what causes seizures in dogs?

Seizures occur for many reasons. There are a number of classification schemes for seizures based on why they occur or what they look like when they do occur. A short explanation of one of those schemes might help to understand what the possibilities are.

As the seizure ends it is common for the dog to be disoriented and confused.
Seizures are most commonly from brain injuries, encephalitis, heat stroke, brain problem, poisoning, organ failure.

Has your dog gotten into anything poisonous? Anti freeze, chocolate, insecticides?

There are medications for epilepsy as well, if that is the cause.

During the seizure, or before, move the dog to a safe location, otherwise don't disturb it. Write down the length of the seizure.
Seizures lasting more than five minutes can cause brain damage and death, the vet can give a medication to calm it down and diagnose the problem. Please call the closest University animal clinic, they are usually open 24 hours for emergencies, and I hope there is one reasonably close for you.
We can't tell if he's going to be ok on ya, but if the seizures are long then it seems to be an extreme emergency. Try to comfort your dog and have someone call the closest univ. and most vet clinics have an answering machine that will give a phone number for emergencies and a 24 hour clinic.

Be aware, our U vet school requires 25% down payment when the dog is brought in. Not cheap, but the best care there is.
I'll say a little prayer for your pup and hope things turn out well.

Too many things can cause seizures in a dog. If this is just starting today and 3 seizures in one day makes me suspect poison.
If you rub honey on the dogs lips during a seizures, it will reduce the lenght of the seizure.
You definitely need to consult a vet and fast.

We have had Belgian Sheepdogs and epilepsy seems to show up in the breed on occasion. Don't know what type of dog you have but do try to get to the vet as soon as possible. Many cities have at least one 24/7 emergency clinic for pets. Maybe one is near you. It would break my heart to see mine when she had seizures, but after so test at the vet we were given phenobarbital just like people take. It took care of the problem. Hopefully, that's what your dog is experiencing and not reacting to some form of poison. Good luck! G

It could be what would be considered epilepsy in humans. It takes a lot out of a dog when they have a seizure. In some dogs it is genetic but there is a possibility that the dog could have gotten something toxic...look in your phone book to see if there is an emergency vet. We have an emergency vet that is open when the other vet's are closed...sorta like the pet version of the emergency room...the best thing would be to get him to a vet as soon as you can.

Sometimes a dog will appear to have a seizure when it isn't eating good and its sugar level is down too low.Next time your pet seems to be in a seasure give it a dab of honey,or some plain karo syrup on its tongue.this will definately bring it out of the seizure and raise its blood sugar.Would also suggest putting a little sugar in its drinking water and try the Nutri -Cal ,or Nutri -Stat that comes in a tube like tooth paste and can be purchased at any pet store,or feed store.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7SQ

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Call an emergency number! If the dog is having siezures like that he has major problems that can't wait!

Several things could cause the siezures, including poison.
