The race really has little to nothing to do with the styling of one's hair, it really boils down to texture. I'm assuming that your child's hair is coarse and or thick or super curly and maybe a little frizzy or dry? Do the following, which works for my daughter's hair, especially if you're interested in keeping it "natural" without chemicals:
1. Have a bristle hairbrush (one that is stiff and natural if possible)
2. Have a wide-tooth plastic comb (one where the ends have a small (ball-like end, not the pointy kind-comfort)
3. Have a cup of warm water big enough for the brush to fit in
4. Have a towel to wrap onto the child's shoulder (so water doensn't drip down her back
5. A jar of hair grease (something with botanicals and smells nice that won't cake up and leave the hair 'waxy', no pomade)
6. Have a movie or something on TV that she likes to watch
7. make sure you have plenty of light and that you are comfortable
First, section her hair to comb through it. There's nothing worse that someone yanking your head if your hair is coarse. Sections are easier to deal with. Next, dip the brush into the warm water. Brush through the sections. The warm water will open up the folicles of the hair and will add moisture to it. The hair grease needs to be added next and this will seal in the moisture and you'll see the curls come out and they will then be smooth curls. Depending on the style you like and your own creativity, you can do lots of cool things!
Most importantly, use the time to bond with your babygirl. This special attention takes a while to do and perfect, but it will teach her that she and her hair are beautiful and that her hair is very special.

treat it like you own hair. my daughter wanted it chemically straightened, after that it was never naturally curly as it was once before. now she just fries it on a daily basis and it never grows therefore she never cuts it. good luck but you will lose in time
