Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN
in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant
who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to
us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is
an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or
birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in
every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no
divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something
else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the
American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the
English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a
loyalty to the American people."

I disagree. To completely assimilate and throw away any sense of heritage, family history and culture is a terrible thing to ask of someone. I think that, as a country brimming with cultures, we should be able to take advantage of that somehow and learn from one another. I've always been fascinated with other cultures and nationalities, and I wish that I knew more about my own Irish heritage. Somehow, over the generations, it has been lost.

I think that it is very difficult for someone to come to our country and keep every aspect of their culture and nationality and not take in any American aspects, and I think, that by coming here in the first place, you must be willing to mix into the general American culture. Mix doesn't mean completely blend and lose your identity though!

I don't agree with it. The principles of equality and what it means to be an American will never and can never change. But the world is a different place than it was 100 years ago and if nothing else, we are more diverse, more varied a population sharing less space and fewer resources. The language thing is more about accepting different people than it is about being American. We need to show compassion.

Sounds great to me - we should enforce this now or is this one of those laws that just sort of get buried and forgotten about...Send this to your senator and demand he/she enforce it.
