My dog's kidneys have failed and the past 3 days she hasn't eaten or drank anything. She's been acting weird, she hasn't barked when anyone has come to the door like she always does, she hasn't whined, and she is just laying there not doing anything. She keeps getting up and going outside where she just stands there and looks around and then lays in the snow until I end up carrying her back inside. She is 10 yrs old in human yrs. I don't know what the hell to do!

Your doggie is in its last days, is uncomfortable, and nothing is going to change it. Perhaps it is time to ask the vet for some pills or a shot...either way, be there with your dear doggie in her last minutes...it is ok to let go, and kinder in the long run. I just lost my dog of 11 years, and it hurts very badly, but there is a time that we must let go out of love..and it sounds as if that time is here with you and your dear dog. I am so sorry for you...I know exactly how it feels...terrible.

Being that she is 10 yrs. old you should probably try to except the fact that it is her time to go soon. I don't think taking her to the vet would be much of a help to her since a dog's life expectancy is 10 to 11 yrs. Just try to make her as comfortable as you can and let her know how much she was a part of your life.( this wil be more of a comfort to you in the end, but dogs are very smart and they sense our feelings,so I'm sure she will feel better if you just talk to her.) They have feelings too. I hope this has been some kind of a help for you during this hard time.

My dog lived 3 years with insufficient kidney function. He was diagnosed with renal failure. Do you feed your dog prescription food for kidney failure? My dog went through a few spurts of strange behavior, but once I got him completely switched over to the food my vet prescribed he did fine. Do not feed anything other then dog food and treats. Watch the amount of protein. If you go to a pet store you can find treats that are made especially low in protein.

It's strange that she's not drinking. In my experience dogs in kidney failure will drink A LOT (causing accidents in the house sometimes) to try and compensate for the kidneys.

I would also suggest reading up on the effects of renal failure. I did a lot of research and was able to help my dog tremendously not just with the vet's adfvice, but my own knowledge of the disease.

You should also be getting regular urine tests and blood draws on your dog. You vet should be keeping a close eye on the creatinine and B.U.N. The vet can explain it all to you.

It's a sad situation, but with proper management (depending on what stage your dog is in) your dog could possibly have a lot more time left.

I feel your pain and if you want to talk e-mail me. I've been through it.

If your pet isn't eating or drinking you must take control and force feed her,or she will die.Give her some baby non-flavored pediolyte by forcing it down her and boil some chicken, cut in small pieces, put in a blender with some broath and puree it.Force feed her this if you have to.You will see a difference within 24 hours. You should also put a dab of honey or plain karo syrup on her tongue, this will bring her sugar level up and make her feel much better. You can do this several times until she gets her strength back. The key is to get the pediolyte and food down her.

There comes a time in every good dog owner's life when they need to make the decision to put a dog down. It's heartbreaking, I know.
If you have had her to the vet and all treatments have been used, or within sensible options at least, then your girl is near her end.
At this point, she is dehydrated and confused and suffering. If you have done all you can for her, then it is time to bring her in to your vet so she won't continue to suffer.
I'm very sorry for you and your dog. Please know, your heart will have plenty of room to love a new dog and you will not be betraying her for loving a new puppy when you are ready.

No matter how much you describe your dog's symptoms no one on YA can diagnose your dog's ailment. Even if you do get "advice" how do you know who is right and who is wrong. What if you follow the advice given here and it gets worse. Take her to the vet or at the very least call a vet(does not cost a penny) and find out what he thinks you should do.

That is not a very good sign however the only person that can do anything substantial for your baby is a vet. You need to find an emergency vet asap and get your girl there. Good luck to you both!

Hi,

I know EXACTLY what you're going through. My 11 year old dog was doing the same thing last week. I know its hard, but you've got to do this one final thing for her. Maybe her time has come, maybe not, but you have to take her to the Vet. I know its going to be a painful thing for you to do. Gods knows it broke my heart to say goodbye to my best freind. But you MUST do it.
