A friend of mine called me today to ask if she should turn off her WiFi network, because she heard that they were dangerous for kids and that some schools were removing their networks.

This was the first I’d heard of this, but I guess it makes sense that if mobile phone masts are considered dangerous and aren’t allowed to be placed near schools, then I guess WiFi networks could also be transmitting harmful radiation. Running a WiFi network at home could be the same as having a mobile phone mast in your front room.

I did some digging around and I did find some details. Mobile phone masts and the low-level radiation they create have been linked with losses of concentration, headaches, fatigue and possibly cancer.

It is nothing like having a mobile phone mast in the front room. A wifi signal produces about 1/10 th of a watt of power. A mobile phone mast could produce 200 - 300 watts. The frequency of wifi is 2.4GHz. Similar to mobile phones - actually a bit higher. But this is the same frequency used by a bluetooth earpiece. How close is that to the brain !? The wifi transmitter is not producing a continuous signal. Just bursts (packets) of energy. In short - it is very low power, it is too far from the kids bodies (i.e. more than 10cm) and is not actually transmitting very often. Don't worry.

It is true that some schools are removing their wireless networks. There is no scientific evidence yet to indicate whether they present a risk or not. I think it's only like TV or radio really so the risk will be very low. It's another form of radiation in the end.
I think you need to make your own decision, once you have investigated the arguments for and against.

There are theories that all forms of electromagnetic "radiation" are dangerous for ALL brains. Remember radiation is not radioactivity. How many peopled do you know who have cancer/other "problems" from mobile phones? None? There's your answer, its harmless.
