I heard there's a recipe for sore throat that uses Whiskey, honey and lemon juice! Can anyone verify this? If so, do you add water and drink it hot like tea? What's the recipe if it exists and does it work?

Hi,

If you have a sore throat, I'd steer clear of lemon if I were you.
Lemon is good for cutting through phlegm buildup, but the last thing you should consume for sore throats IMO I think the idea that it's good for sore throats is an old wive's tale. Think about it.
Lemon is highly concentrated in citric acid....ACID....an IRRITANT!! Don't you think your throat is sore enough?? *LOL*

For something gentler, yet still potent enough to work, I'd suggest apple cider vinegar...it's just acidic enough to aid your body in killing bacteria, but not too acidic (like lemon) to make you feel even crappier....The catch is, however, is that it tastes vile by itself....you may want to dilute it some and add honey...I'd use it as a gargle instead of drinking it as well....

The best thing I've tried for sore throats so far is not alcohol-based or a home remedy, it's an herbal tea called "Throat Coat" it's great....I've usually found them at drug stores, health food stores and such. Believe me, I have tonsils that should have been taken out when I was a child!! I've got frequent flier miles when it comes to sore throats!!!

Still, if you insist on sticking with your original idea (which is usually called a "Hot Toddy" in old country folk circles BTW), I strongly suggest that you 1) ditch the lemon 2) try to make it as thick a consistency as possible to help soothe and coat your throat and 3) consume it hot or warm to help soothe you further

Good luck and be well ^_^

The remedy that I grew up was: take a tablespoon of honey and mix it with a tablespoon of lemon juice. Fresh lemon is the best, but you can use bottled. I'm not sure about using lime instead. You drink it, you do not gargle with it. Green tea is also good for you. Hope you feel better soon.

The best thing for a sore throat is baking soda, I like to brush my teeth with it then swallow and follow with filtered tap water. Your sore throat comes from all the extra food you just ate for Thanksgiving, which produces a lot of extra bacteria in your whole body, your throat is just one of the first things to get sore. Whiskey may be more fun but if you want to kill the bacteria use baking soda, you will never solve a bacteria problem with food. Whiskey is food. Plenty of water and no liquid food, just enough solid food to keep energy up and this will make short work of a sore throat. Just remember it only takes 20 min. for bacteria to have babies, so give yourself 2 to 3 hours between meals so the bacteria population is kept low. This is the key to healthy living in the first place and a good way to stay healthy. Oh and remember anything with flavor creates a film on the skin and gives the bacteria the advantage, because your saliva and other bodily fluids can't get to the and kill them and with millions in your body replicating every 20 min. it doesn't take very long for them to cause trouble.
Good Luck!

My mother told me everytime i got a sore throat to mix warm water and honey , stir it and then gargle the water and honey untill it is all gone, 2 times a day for like a week and its makes your sore throat go away.
**When you gargel the honey coats your throat to help it feel better.**
