Groomers do not tranquilize dogs. Even if you use a groomer that is in a vets office the vet would not tranquilize without the owners permission. Groomers use a grooming post that helps keep the animal in place. Sometimes a muzzle is used. Gentle patience is the key to gaining a dogs trust. Don't try to push and do too much at one sitting. If the dog snaps or struggles with you don't just stop what you are doing. That would just tell the dog whatever he is doing in resistance is working. Instead, try to calm the dog with firm but gentle reassurance that all is well. Take it a little at a time and groom often. The more accustomed the dog is to being handled the easier it will be for both you and the dog. Many dogs who have learned to be comfortable with the whole grooming process actually enjoy the attention.

Groomers do not use tranquilizers. Any groomer that does should be put out of business. It's dangerous and unethical. I won't even groom dogs that have been tranquilized by their owners with a vet prescription. I believe that grooming under tranquilizers MUST be done in a vet hospital, in case something goes wrong.

A lot of the time it's all in the attitude. We are confident in handling the dog, so the dog behaves. Being up on the table or up in the raised tub makes a difference too, the dog is less certain and more likely to stay put. I usually have a grooming post at each end, one for the head and one around the tummy. I have muzzles or elizabethan collars if necessary, and someone to help hold for me if that's what the dog needs. Depending on the dog and it's needs, I can be very firm, or very soothing. I'm also not afraid of being bitten, so I'm not tentative in my handling of the dog. Even if the dog fights me, if I stay calm and keep grooming they usually realize that it does no good, so they may as well cooperate.

However, there are a few dogs that are so nasty I refuse to do them.

If your dog is tricky then just talk to the groomer and tell them the problem, if you don't like them don't leave your dog there and take your money someplace else. You should feel comfortable with them.

Most of the time the dogs are better behaved with the groomer than the owner! Thats because the groomer is a stranger and used to handling dogs. The dog doesn't know how much they can get away with and don't tend to mess about as much - they try it on more with you.
They are often put on a table which also makes them quieter, and they are tied up.
If the groomer thinks its necessary your dog will be muzzled.

most dogs who object to their owner doing stuff, do not object to a proper groomer doing it oddly enough. I think it's because we are confident and firm. I do rescue and fostering now and as soon as I take a new dog in, it gets bathed and groomed. In a worst case scenario a dog who threatens to bite while being groomed gets a soft muzzle put on and talked to while groomed to calm it down. The muzzle gives me confidence and if I am calm, the dog is calm.

they usually will mussle the dog unless they are a grooming place that does not do that. they just hold it down or get help from another groomer to do the bathing. as for the back end brushed i know they usually put a collar on them and tie them to a cubicle so they can keep them there.
