I have started seeing a guy who never went to college and has a blue-collar job. I have a master's degree and a professional occupation. He's a wonderful person, and obviously very intelligent...just not educated. Am I barking up the wrong tree, or can it work?

By the way, I appreciate the fact that most of you (not all, admittedly) seem to "get" that I'm not feeling superior to this guy....I think he's a great person and am as concerned about his perceptions of me as I am about my perceptions of him. I was a little worried to ask the question, expecting lots of attacks, and have been pleasantly surprised overall that most of you understand where my head (and heart) are at with this. Your willingness not to jump to conclusions about me are greatly appreciated. My father never even finished high-school and is the smartest man I know, so I'm definitely not a snob. I'm just trying to be practical. Many thanks for the thoughtful and helpful answers!

It will depend on you. Love conquers all is almost true. lol
You have to be wise. Don't become condescending. Don't take him into a social situation that he doesn't feel comfortable with. If you make more money than he does, never bring it up! Furthermore, always build him up. Never tear him down.
With these things in mind, it can work!

Yes it can work -I am a blue collar-and very proud of it-my wife is white collar and I am very proud of her .Don't think that just because a person didn't attend collage that they are uneducated -in fact you kind of sound like the one that needs to learn a thing or two! A degree is a great thing but its not the end of the world-if the guy treats you good and is making you happy then why would you even ask if it would work-a lot of people w/ degrees aren't as special as they think they are so get over yourself and give the guy a break before he wises up a figures out that your so shallow and finds himself a "stupid" girl!!

I don't see anything wrong with it. A person's level of education is not necessarily the end-all, be-all. People who are highly educated don't necessarily have other kinds of smarts, like street smarts, or skills in different areas. Likewise, those who aren't highly educated can still have a lot of knowledge and ability. I think it's important for my future husband to value education, but I'm not looking for someone who knows about all the same things as me. In fact, I think that if he and I knew about exactly the same things, it would be really boring because we wouldn't be able to learn much from each other.

Yes, it certainly can work. Unfortunately the "mixed marriages" I have seen have all failed. The men had an inferiority complex that eventually reared its ugly head. They became controlling to hide their lack of education. The funny thing is the lack of education really was no big issue to the wives. They didn't care that the men had high school diplomas while they had master's degrees. They just wanted a man to love them for who they were.

You're not "barking up the wrong tree" at all. You could possibly be better off with a man of this sort if he's very down-to-Earth. Education is fine, especially for a person who has a chosen profession, but it really has nothing to do with a person's character or how good of a heart he or she has.

It can work in any way you can imagine. By the way, I'm a blue-collar guy (I'm educated though) and I'm seeing a white-collar woman and it's working out swimmingly.
