I can sneeze sometimes with my eyes open. But only if they are light sneezes. If they are really big sneezes then no I can't keep my eyes open.

It's an instinctual reaction to protect your eyeballs from the pressure in your head during a sneeze. Someone here says you can train yourself to keep your eyes open - I really don't think you can!

During a sneeze there is so much pressure that builds up in your head and behind your eyes. Your eyelids close to help keep that pressure from straining your eyes.

It's a survival instinct. You're vulnerable when you sneeze so automatically your body goes into "protection mode" and safeguards your vulnerable points, most notably your eyes at that time.

It was invented before cars where, when obviously sneezing thus closing your eyes, and driving don't mix.

We need an upgrade!

I heard that when you sneeze the air that is coming out is going over 60mph and so it's such a speed that you automattically react. I think. Don't quote me on this. But good question. I kind of wandered the same thing.
