my daughter recently purchased a horse who has had the same name for nine years, and she wants to change his name. Does this matter, and how do you know your horse knows its name?

My horses know their names and will come when you call.
Mine have the names on their papers but all have a barn name and that is what we call them all the time.
I have known people who changed the horses name and they learned it. Much like a dog call the name and feed them using the name, Most will learn to adapt.

When I call my horse she looks up and/or comes to me. If I call another horses name, she doesn't.

Call the horses name when he's in his stall or calm in the Field(but not right at or after feeding time), and see if he perks up. If he does, he knows his name. If you still want to change the name, change it to something that sounds similar.

Some people think its bad luck to change a horse's name, and I can see why. If you ever really need to call a horse, it helps if he knows his name, but if it got changed, he doesn't know it anymore, does he?

Horses are very intelligent---ya gotta keep the name the horse has had. I read that a horse has an IQ of around 40 points or so--meaning its like a child in pre-school....Ya don't change a kids name -so leave the horse alone!

Yes it matters. Dogs come when you call them, horses also respond to their names. If you have to change its name, make it something that sounds very similar, like a rhyme. Might help, best thing though - leave it as it is.

Yes, horses know there name but they can learn a new one if you teach it to them.
but some don't it just depends on how much you really want to change your horses name.

Yes, animals know themselves by the names you give them. If you try to change the name you call them they aren't going to know what you are talking about. It's a living being, not some toy that has no awareness.

Why don't you ask your daughter if you can start calling her something different, too?
