Well I would explain to him that in fact it is a very nobel thing to do when you care for people and unfortunatly not all of those people we care about reciprocate those feelings back to us. Explain to him that you know his feelings must be hurt but still encourage him to be a caring person, because in time he will have people in his life that will care back for him the same way he cares for them.

You don't give much information to formation opinion on.
Is your son 6, 7 or 8? and someone like a close family member forgot his birthday?
You have to tell him people are who they are and we cannot make them or wish them to be who we want them to be.You have to reassure him that you care about him and will always be there for him.
