Every one here is going to tell the breed of dog they have is the best dog for kids, well a lot of them are wrong. You need to research the many different breeds and make an educated decision on what you think is the best breed for you and your families lifesyle. AKC has a web site with descriptions of all recognized breeds of dog. AKC.org You could also read a few books like Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, or Idiots Guide to Chosing, Buying and Raising a Dog.

If properly trained and embraced as a beloved member of the family, any breed can make a great pet. With that said, some dogs are seen as more “kid-friendly” than others and, as a result, have become extremely popular among families. According to the AKC, the five most popular breeds in the United States are:

Labrador Retrievers are by far America’s most popular dog—more than 140,000 Lab puppies were registered last year with the AKC—and have a reputation for being playful, hardworking and affectionate toward children. The Lab is easily trained and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.

Golden Retrievers are sporty, easy to train and strong, but their most outstanding trait is character. They are outgoing and devoted companions to people of all ages, happy and trusting. They make great hunting companions, too.

German Shepherd are noble in appearence and character. This breed's courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared him to families for generations. Active and outdoorsy, German Shepherds are very fond of children and make wonderful companions.

Beagles love being around people and other animals. They are gentle, happy companions who thrive on affection and attention. They are also clever, quick, and, most of all curious. They need plenty of active exercise.

Dachshund has a lively, upbeat personality—spunky, curious and friendly. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshund’s love to dig, romp and run. They are affectionate, especially with children, and enjoy going for walks and other forms of exercise

You should do your research before you bring any animal into your home. A dog your is a responsiblity for the rest of its life and should not be bought on impulse.

I guess my first question would be to you - have you ever owned or trained a dog yourself?
some mid-sized breeds can be great dogs - but if you do not have a well trained dog in any breed - you could end up very un happy ( just like the dog )
Hounds are talkers (Beagles Bassets etc)
Most Herding dogs - need a job - or they get into mischief!
also understand - sometimes VERY DIFFICULT to get an apartment with a dog. and woe ... if he cause damages.

~~OK ~~ END of warnings....
the reality is ANY breed could be good or not. it all depends on the way a pup is raised. with kids ... good kid dog. If you are going to buy a pup - visit with the parent dogs. How do they accept you.
No money for a pup - keep in contact with your local vet. ask to post a "Dog needed for good home" - sadly some families are forced to give up a good dog - because of any number of reasons.
and more sad - the elderly are forced to lose their companion due to illness / retirement homes.
visit the dog pounds - being a dog walker for a while will let you be their friend and give you hands on with different breeds. Just be aware I would say some of those dogs did not have the best life and may need new training.
Of course I have my favorite breeds .... that we (5 of us) grew up with. Boxers - Bull Terrier - Weimaraner (Gray Ghost) - others larger and smaller.
my best wishes!
dogs are awesome!

You maybe already guessed it from my name, but I would say beagles are my fav! :) I have two of them and I just love them to pieces. I love their personalities. I love how they tend to adopt parts of their owners' personalities because they seek to please and feel safer when they are closer to their pack. And I noticed several people on here saying how much they hate the barking/howling/baying that they do. I couldn't disagree more - I love it! I don't live anywhere where it would bother neighbors and it doesn't bother me. I think it's adorable and a unique sound that sets them apart. They are wonderful guard dogs. They love to cuddle. I couldn't have asked for more perfect babies! The only thing I do wish is that they had been better treated before I adopted them. They were abandoned as puppies and while I've worked hard to keep them healthy, they will always have weaker immune systems than most other dogs and they've also been prone to joint problems, which is common in beagles. I think it bothers ME more than it does THEM, though. LOL What do YOU think about hounds and beagles?

Instead of giving you my opinion, I'll give you a list of medium-sized dog breeds, and you can look over them, and find out which one suits your needs the best.

Also, take into consider the energy level, for then if you move out and into an apartment, the dog will not become destructive due to boredom.
