I think it is great to be able to talk directly with God and neither you in your natural mind or Satan and understand. Also when you pray or talk in tongues you are praying Gods perfect will for you or someone else.

The last mention is in 1 Corinthians c. 55 A.D.
Tongues did not surface again until the rise of Pentecostalism around the turn of the last century. They are a false manifestation of the un-holy spirit that chokes the life out of the pentecostal and Charismatic churches today. Even though these churches "seem" to be growing in quantum leaps, they are moving farther away from Christianity. The fake tongues movement has driven more people away from church than any other scandal.

Speaking in tongues was to be a sign for the Jews. Want to be Spirit filled AND Biblical? Go to Galatians chapter 5 for the fruit of the Spirit...speaking in tongues is not mentioned as a sign of being Spirit filled. The key is..."He must increase, but I must decrease". The more you YIELD to God, the more Jesus is evident in your life.
EDIT:
Plus the Holy Spirit will ALWAYS glorify the SON...in these churches that speak in so-called tongues, all the glory is given to the Holy Spirit. Not Scriptural!

I believe its valid when done according to the BIBLE. Read 1 Corinthians Chapter 14. Its the Apostle Paul's teaching on speaking in tongues as given to him by the SPIRIT OF GOD!

It's written in the Bible, and I believe that this gift does exist today. But the Bible does place a lot of restrictions on it, because it can be made up either because someone imagines it's being given to them, out of emotion; or a person could do this in a way that creates more harm than good. When a person speaks in tongues, they also must have someone that can interpret present or it only builds up themselves.

God gives different gifts to different people, so it's not for everyone. But it can be a wonderful way for God to give a message nowadays.

In response to the skeptics that this does not follow Biblical principles shown in Acts chapter 2, or in I Corinithian 12, you might want to ask someone in the Assemblies of God headquarters down in Missouri. There are many accounts that it has been used in a case to speak to people in their own language.

Also, I know of a local minister who speaks the language of the Chaldeans (the Christian sect in Iraq). He found someone here in the U.S. worshipping in this language that had never spoken it. That person did speak in his native tongue and the message is definitely from God. And this pastor was a former Baptist minister who used to preach against Tongues for Today!!

i believe it was a gift that has passed. Biblical tongues were known languages that the speaker had no knowlege or proficiency in, for the benefit of an unbelieving Israel.

1Cor.14:21 "In the law it is written, "With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord." 1Cor. 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe",

These verses are clear that tongues purpose was as a sign to THIS PEOPLE. We must ask ourselves who is....."THIS PEOPLE " and what kind of sign was it ? The "law" was given to Israel. This people is ISRAEL. NOT THE CHURCH OR GENTILES! The Church is not mentioned anywhere in the Old testament.....

If tongues was a "warning" sign, and the judgment was fulfilled in 70 a.d., then we know when tongues CEASED as Paul said it would. 1 cor 13,8: "Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away'

The word cease means that it will end, in and of itself. Fail and vanish are different in that they mean that they will need to have something in the future to complete it.

We err if we put tongues in the same category or context with knowlege and prophecy. Scriptures point a clear picture for us as to when tongues ceased and it's prophetic fulfillment by the church before the nation of Israel. If the judgment did take place in 70AD, then we NO longer need a warning sign,do we?

Personally, I think it is gibberish. While I wouldn't pretend to be certain about this point, I think that tongues have ceased. There is no longer any need for prophesy, as the canon is complete. In addition, even if tongues were still in operation, the way in which tongues are used in most churches today is completly non-Biblical. No translator, multiple speakers at a time, etc. But I'm no expert. Check out "To be Continued" by Dr. Sam Waldron.

I have been around Christianity a long time, over 60 years, and I have never heard or heard of anyone speaking in tongues as they are describe in the Bible. No one can communicate to others in a language that they have not learned, It just doesn't happen today. Until it does, these promotors of it should remain silient. Charles Fox and Agnes Osmond, who started this whole thing in 1901 have led millions of genuine people into one of the biggest heresies that is in Christianity today. I always challange these people to produce one thing out of Acts chapter 2 that is the same as what is being done in pentacostal churches today, and I have never had anyone give such evidence.
Those of you who believe in it, just speak to someone that knows no English in their own language, As I said, it just doesn't happen.
You do not need to be a Christian to do it either. I know a Prohessor, Dr. Samerin, who teaches all of his students how to do it in his linguistic classes in a secular university. It is a psychic experience.

The gift of speaking in tongues ended with the death of the apostles. The Bible foretold that it would:
1 Corinthians 13:8--"Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away."
So if someone claims to have that gift, it is not from God.

I speak in tongues and I think that it is a good way to pray. I have been speaking in tongues since I was in 5th grade.

I believe it is real and is like in the bible when the disciples were in the upper room and began to speak in tongues. I go to a church that sometimes has a message in tongues and an interpretation.
