The average weight for any given cat would depend on the cat's individual bone structure. Some cats are just right at 6 - 8 pounds, others can carry 20 lbs. and not be considered overweight. It all depends on breed or what breeds are in your cats genes.
Your vet could tell you what an ideal weight is for your individual cat. A Maine Coon cat who weighed 8 lbs., would be considered extremely malnourished. A tiny framed fancy breed might be considered chunky at 10 lbs. It is not a one size fits all thing for cats or people.
If your vet determines that your cat is overweight, he can recommend a high quality food that would be high in fiber, yet packed with nutrition. This would allow your cat to feel satisfied after feeding, without packing in extra unneeded calories.

Most cats weigh 8-12 pounds. My cat weighs 20! I try to put him on a diet, but then he gets into the dog's food.
Buy a lower-calorie cat food. Don't get cheap stuff. Also, no kitty treats or people food between meals. Get her to exercise more by playing with her. Dangle cat toys/ feathers, etc. so that she jumps and stretches.
Talk to your vet for more advice. Your cat is worth a little extra money and TLC!

Rule of thumb: If your cat looks fat, he/she probably is too fat.
Of course, you'd have to take into account if the cat is a long hair or a short hare.
The fact that you even ask the question, and how you worded the headline of the question indicates, to me, that you already know that your cat is overwieght. Now, unless you cat is a VERY good hunter, the reason the cat gets fat is that it gets feed too much.
A cat, by it's own genetics does not know how much food is too much. It's instinct is to get down as much food as it can, while the food is there. It's brain and body don't know when it will get more food, later.
YOU control it's eating. YOU put him on a diet, if you are concerned about it's health. Cut down on portions and snacks. Consult a vet about vitamins and kinds of foods to best take care of your kitty.
Like humans, diabetes is only one of many things that can go wrong with your cat as a result of obesity. Damage to bone and muscle can occur. Eventual renal failure, heart and lung problems. LOVE your kitty by taking care of it, not by spoiling it.

If you feel your cat is overweight, put him on a "Lite" cat food. Also, the average weight for cats usually varies depending on the breed(s) involved. The average adult weight should be between 9-11lbs, depending on breed.
