I'm stuck. I have no idea what to do. I'm bored everyday and it gets worse. I have a girlfriend and comfortable life but it feels like it is not enough. Nothing is exciting anymore. I lost that special feeling I used to get during holidays. And I feel like I'm becoming paralyized on the couch. I keep watching TV and I don;t feel like getting up. The idea of going out seems wretched to me. I don't think I'm depressed because I laugh at comedy TV and seem to be good humoured around myself-just not others. Also, I feel this nagging pressure to be doing something great-like a subconscious pressure to succeed-but at what-it's weird-anyone have this?

Yeah, I've been through that same phase, exactly as you described it, and I know you don't want to hear it, but that phase was the beginning of my journey through depression, which I am only now recovering from.

Talk to your doctor about your feelings and situation, even if you think it is nothing to be worried about.

Trust me, the fact that you are aware of this subtle change in your life means it is more than subtle, and will eventually ruin your life if you don't take some preventative measures right now.

Mental weaknesses or bad habits like the ones you describe are the beginning of mental illnesses, but what I have found as the best counter to mental weaknesses is to build up physical strengths, i.e. exercise and eat well every day, and getting plenty of sleep every night.

You will find that if you slowly but surely start altering your physical habits and increasing your physical energy, your mental energy will improve as well, along with your emotions and your overall sense of well-being that you seem to be losing.

Get away from the t.v. and the Internet, and get outside, no matter how hard or painful it seems, force yourself to do it; overcoming (or in your case preventing) depression is only done by continuously exercising the will, not letting it rot by watching t.v., the Internet, gambling, smoking, drinking, or any other addiction that sabotages your will.

That all you have to do in sum - get back your will.

I know it's easier said than done, but once you do it, you will realize that you haven't lost anything of importance in your life, you just have lost appreciation and the meaning of those things.

You've already answered your own question. You feel a pressure to do something great and you're not. You are feeling no purpose in life and that's bad for the soul. Just because you laugh does not mean you are not depressed. I am the funniest girl ever and I laugh a lot but still have depression issues. You may too. You could also just be in a funk of what to do with your life.

Hope this helps.

Get spiritual... find something to believe in. Get a part time job or something that will keep you busy. Also having a job might make you feel better about "not succeeding"

Maybe you should get involved in a local church. That may be the man upstairs tapping your shoulder because he needs you. See how you feel about going to church. Get out and do something you've never done before. (Non-violent of course!) There has to be someone you can confide in about your feelings.

NEVER EVER get involved with a psychiatrist!!! I cannot stress that enough. They destroyed my life. They will diagnose you with bipolar or schizophrenia or who knows what.

Depression is not about sadness. It's about being able to function. Your have symptoms - you can't motivate yourself and you have anxiety. You should get checked, you may have it and be able to treat it. Sometimes it can be as simple as forcing yourself to exercise every day... sometimes more intervention is needed.
