Yes. I was very good friends with a family who were members. They had an excellent understanding of the Bible. As others stated, they are assigned different (military) ranks within the church. Although they are a strong Christian church, they do not believe in baptism, which was really interesting as it is such a clear teaching in the Bible.
It is often members of the church who ring the bells at grocery stores at Christmas time to collect money. This money does go to feed and help less fortunate people (majority), but also can go to other causes of the Salvation Army. The local church where I lived actually used some of the money to repave the parking lot.
So, if you don't want to give to a church, then don't, but they do do a ton for great causes.

Apparently it is. I knew they were a charity group(they've got ringers at the local Wal Mart), but I guess one learns something new as they apparently are a religious denomination as well, a branching off from the Methodist denomination.
Knew it was a Christian charity considering the little donation stands with the Salvation Army signs say "God bless you" on them, didn't know it was anything more until I looked it up just now to answer your question.

Yes. They help the poor and needy with food and clothing and many other things. They have churches and fundraisers. They even have ranks, like in a real army. The local guy here I heard speak is a Major.
And a primary goal of theirs is to preach the message of salvation, while helping the community.
Hope I helped
David

Yes they are and the only religious organisations i know of that actually help unfortunate people. They have shelters for the homeless, charity shops that provide household items for people in need as well as numerous other things they do in the community.

The first answer is right. It's an evangelical church, if I understand correctly. Here in the States it's not so much of a popular church, but it was well-attended where I used to live in Canada.

Yes, very fine Christians. I have known some of them. Very Godly and loving. I will forever be grateful to them as people and for how they helped me after Katrina.

Yes it is very religious in nature. I beleive it is a Protestant denomination and international nonsectarian Christian organization for evangelical and philanthropic work.
