Lover of Bible truth,
The woman is wearing red and purple, with a cup of gold in hand. The Israelite priests wear red and purple and used cups of gold in the temple worship. Same as the Catholic Priest.

Theophilus,
The woman also drinks the cup of wrath.
Isai 51:17 Rouse yourself! Rouse yourself! Arise, O Jerusalem, You who have drunk from the Lord's hand the cup of His anger; The chalice of reeling you have drained to the dregs.

I would say there are clues in Hosea. She's the one God has given His love to but she keeps whoring after other gods. It's got to be the Jewish nation.

Identifying “Babylon the Great”
THE book of Revelation contains expressions that are not to be understood literally. (Revelation 1:1) For example, it mentions a woman with the name “Babylon the Great” written on her forehead. This woman is said to be sitting on “crowds and nations.” (Revelation 17:1, 5, 15) Since no literal woman could do this, Babylon the Great must be symbolic. So, what does this symbolic harlot represent?
At Revelation 17:18, the same figurative woman is described as “the great city that has a kingdom over the kings of the earth.” The term “city” indicates an organized group of people. Since this “great city” has control over “the kings of the earth,” the woman named Babylon the Great must be an influential organization that is international in scope. It can rightly be called a world empire. What kind of empire? A religious one. Notice how some related passages in the book of Revelation lead us to this conclusion.
An empire can be political, commercial, or religious. The woman named Babylon the Great is not a political empire because God’s Word states that “the kings of the earth,” or the political elements of this world, “committed fornication” with her. Her fornication refers to the alliances she has made with the rulers of this earth and explains why she is called “the great harlot.”—Revelation 17:1, 2; James 4:4.
Babylon the Great cannot be a commercial empire because the “merchants of the earth,” representing the commercial elements, will be mourning her at the time of her destruction. In fact, both kings and merchants are described as looking at Babylon the Great from “a distance.” (Revelation 18:3, 9, 10, 15-17) Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that Babylon the Great is, not a political or a commercial empire, but a religious one.
The religious identity of Babylon the Great is further confirmed by the statement that she misleads all the nations by means of her “spiritistic practice.” (Revelation 18:23) Since all forms of spiritism are demon-inspired, it is not surprising that the Bible calls Babylon the Great “a dwelling place of demons.” (Revelation 18:2; Deuteronomy 18:10-12) This empire is also described as being actively opposed to true religion, persecuting “prophets” and “holy ones.” (Revelation 18:24) In fact, Babylon the Great has such deep hatred for true religion that she violently persecutes and even murders “the witnesses of Jesus.” (Revelation 17:6) Hence, this woman named Babylon the Great clearly represents the world empire of false religion, which includes all religions that stand in opposition to Jehovah God.

If Revelations is not a true book of prophesy, and is simply a coded message about the current events, then the Harlott is the Roman Empire, specifically the city of Rome, in about the year 90 AD.
If the book is true prophesy, then no theories will help until it happens. The trouble with prophesy, my friend, is that the thousands of theories on it will only be proven wrong after it already happened....and then people will say the answer was so obvious that everyone should have known it right away.

The harlot described in Revelation represents Babylon the Great, the ruler of all the kings of the world. Babylon the Great is a representation of false religions of the world. She gets "drunk" with the blood of Christ' followers.

Good question! Revelation is for the most part symbolic, and it says in Rev. 17:18 "the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." Which city is mentioned over and over in the book of Revelation: "Babylon" However, she is spiritual babylon, obviously not literal babylon.
Look at her name in Rev. 17:5 "written on her forehead: Mystery Babylon" A harlot in the bible is a method of worship that combines truth and error. Rev. 17:2 talks of "the wine of her fornication" to fornicate spiritually is to take that which is Holy and mix it with the profane. Just as literal Babylon took the literal Holy vessels from the literal temple and mixed it with profane literal Babylonian customs. Spiritual Babylon does the same with spiritual Holy things: the Truth of God, his Word.
So this Harlot is a representation of the doctrine of Satan that tries to decieve by presenting some truth and some error to deceive. Notice she's riding the beast: was the Catholic church in the middle ages overcome by compromising with pagan traditions? was there some idolatry and indulgence selling going on back then? It was a mix of truth and error that was leading the Church of Rome in the middle ages.
Notice in Rev.12 we see a good woman clothed with light, she is the true church, the one that remains loyal to God. She doesn't compromise the truth with error.
God bless, I hope this helps.

The harlot or Babylon the Great is the world empire of false religion of which Christendom is a major part, and her destruction will come from the political wild beast who will turn against her and completely devastate her.
Revelation 17:16--"And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the harlot; they will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire"

False religion in general: All world religion
Because the wild breast she is riding represents the governments. So how can she be a government if the governments turn on her and make her devasted and naked or exposed.
can't be the financial world because they stand at a distance and say to bad. Has nothing to do with the middle east it is world wide. So it has to be all religions. Soon the governments in an effort to stop the wars between religion will turn on religion and destroy her. Even preachers it says will say I am a farmer see my hands. Denieing they ever preached.

The description gives clues to her identity. Using those clues combined with a process of elimination, one can come away with the correct identity.
Short answer: Babylon the Great is the symbol of all false religion.

Many, many believe it is the Catholic church. And it is easy to see why. But it could be the apostate church. If a lot of denominations join back up with the catholic church-you had better watch out. That would be a strong signal to me.

Eve is the harlot. She is the one who left her soul mate and ate of that tree and the serpent. And she can even be a virgin...
Isa.47
[1] Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.
[2] Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.
[3] Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.
[4] As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.
[5] Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.
It is our very soul that is the harlot. We have taken other husbands rather than our true husband (Christ). We use our five husbands as our help, but they don't work. (five senses)
John.4
[18] For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
Eve ate of the tree and they then got "coats of skins". They were transformed into a beast (creature).
But the harlot can be described in many ways because she is called a "city" and she has flesh that is eaten.
